There's a lengthy step-by-step and lots more pictures on my blog: http://tomstoysoldiers.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/dipped-bolt-action-americans.html

They look good!

I just finished a bunch.  I like the BA plastic guys I have... although I still need to paint the Germans and British troops.

Thanks chaps.
They paint up quite nicely, though the anatomy is a little odd...

I've done a few more:

I've done a set of those. Great models to paint up and dip nicely.
As a matter of fact I sent them on a commando raid just last weekend.  :D

Not to bad using the dip comes out quite effective afterwards.

Cheers,

I painted a box up for a friend. Does anyone else think that there are not enough M1 Garands? I had to substitue M1 Carbines because I did not have enoough Garands for two squads. I think I was short three rifles.

I've finally painted a few more Americans for this project (now re-purposed for Chain of Command rather than Bolt Action).

TWD - I've got a load of Warlord US ready to go, hopefully your results will inspire me to get started.
But...
I assembled my first squad and yes, agree completely with Tom Reed, the number of rifles is not right. You get 15 Garand or 12 Springfields in a box of 25 troops where logically you are going to want 18-20 rifles.
So, I will just buy one or two weapons sprues and suck that up. But the bigger issue is the one you allude to of 'odd proportions'. The heads are enormous and the legs too short. Stood next to Perry plastic Afrika Korps Germans or paratroopers, the likely opponents for my US Army units in Italy they are not that different in height but just look like cartoon characters.
I think your painted ones look better than the unpainted ones so I may push on. But it's a great shame to go to all that work of producing a box of plastics and not to make more realistically proportioned miniatures. I'm tempted to take a rule to the metal heads they sell separately in the hope they might be a little smaller but I suppose that's not too likely.

Yes, once I'd finished the initial Warlord set I rapidly moved over to the much nicer metals from Artizan and Crusader.
They're still "chunky" 28mm style (and dwarf any of the Perry offerings) but they're (to my eye at least) better proportioned and all round nicer models.

I did ask the Warlord chaps about rifles, and yes they're designed with half and half old and new style rifles, so it's not possible to build an entire squad armed with the same rifle. Which seems an odd design decision to have made. In the end I decided I wasn't going to look too hard, and just stuck them together with a mix.
Anyone who wants to test my rivet counting patience is very welcome to point out the inaccuracies.
Just so long as they like taking their meals through a straw all will be well.
 lol

TBH the older I get the less tolerance I have for "multi-part" plastics. I'd rather pay more money for someone talented to make a single piece of metal than faff around with poly cement and snippers.

Having said that, I've just got some Perry DAK that I'm about to start on, but I'll be using those against Perry 8th army which are a better match in stature and sculpting style.

TWD - you know I've no offered up some of the Warlord metal heads to the plastic figures and they are definitely a little smaller, both helmets and faces. It's an expensive way to go, but it could produce a better looking squad, I reckon, to switch out the plastic over-sized heads for the metal ones, a little less so.
