15mm Conquistadors
« on: 16 April 2013, 02:05:59 AM »
I looked at Khurasan Miniatures 15mm Spanish Conquistadors and thought they looked too European in dress. Okay, morion helmets came later, but I didn't notice any padded armor. Does anyone have experience with these figures, or can recommend another 15mm Conquistador line available in the U.S.? Thanks, Rich ::)

Eureka Miniatures, I think they are listed as Portuguese.

They're the Grumpy Miniatures line which Eureka carry - nice figures, I have a bunch myself, and they do have padded armour. They are small 15mm, or true 15mm I guess, compared to say the Venexia Spanish who have some decent Conquistador-looking types which are much bigger.

At the time that I put together my 15mm Aztec and Conquistador collection I could not find any figures that were identified as conquistadors so I used Essex.  I think they worked out pretty well.  You can see the results in my Aztec Gallery at www.warin15mm.com/Aztec-Gallery.html

It's funny that you say that because in fact many of the models do have the thick quilted armour which was worn by Spanish troops in the Colonies.  About half wear that and half are still in the clothing they came over in.  The one exception is the rodoleros, many of whom wore metal armour which would last longer than a jack or brigantine armour, although one pose of rodoleros does wear the native fabric armour.

I used the illustrations of Spanish colonial troops in the Heath book as sources for the colonial Spanish.

If you have a look at our most recent set, a pike and shot unit for the colonies, you'll see that quite a few of the models are in the cotton fabric armour, both the pikes and the shot.  Others are in European dress as that is also shown worn by spaniards in the new world throughout the 16th century.

I don't know if they fit the bill but Naismith Design do an Aztec range available through NAVWAR.  I can't find any photos though.
