Dwarf Vault Warden Team - LOTR Conversion
« on: April 19, 2013, 06:05:42 AM »
Another one cheap conversion to deal with the expensive GW business politic.... lol

Asked by my son for his dwarf LOTR army, i have to find the way to realize 3 Vault Warden Team. A kind of heavily armoured human shieldwall, for those who don't know the LOTR rules system  ;)
These expert tunnel fighters make use of spears and great tower shields to push back their foes, guarding the tunnels and portals of Khazad-dum.

At GW, they look like this :

A couple of minutes later, the question is resolved.

firstly, i pick up this fellows for the job of the spearbearers:

They are near perfect by the poses to represent the spearmen.   ;D

now, let go for the conversion work ......

For the conversion, we need :
A paper clip (a strong one) and a big spearhead. A didn't to much time to find a trident or something like so i choosed  to jump in my Warhammer spare bits box  ???
I found a goblin spear and the ideal spearhead is cut off and drilled.

The original axes are cut off and keep in the LOTR spare bits box for a futur use. A so special one must be kept for a future conversion work with dwarf. The hands are drilled to receive the spear

The third spearman is found too !

It's a dwarf archer used once for my ballista (see this topic for the conversion work on the same figurine : http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=52409.msg616683#msg616683

The paper clip is straightened as a spear pole and it's glued into the spearhead hole.
That's give us, the following chaps, ready for battle !   >:D

and the archer become :

Nice !

It's quite always interesting to see how the same conversion job is treated by other converters  :D

The shield/pavese work is coming in a couple of hours  ;)

ok, a few days could be the right words.

What material to use for our dwarf towershields ?

I don't have plastic card because i found the same materiel just in looking around me ......and as a shield could be lightly curved, i choose a old tube of toothpaste and as usually i take some metal steel (see the topic with my peons http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=10620.0 ) for the 3D shaping of the towershields.

the material :

A piece of metal steel is wrap on the plastic. This material is so smooth and soft that is't very easy to give the shape you want.
A rim is designed with a cutter and holes are drilled all along the edge to feature the rivets.... :D
the gap in the shield is cut off in the material to reach the plastic. The metal is remove and that's give too some part of the rim.

that's give us this kind of shields (each with a different design) :

Now, i have to pick up some Dwarfs to convert into shieldbearer to form the teams with the already done speamen....  ???

The shieldbearers are done !  :D

The base of the conversion is the dwarf archers. I really don't like the idea of dwarf archery so i use the guys for other job like......Shieldbearers, artillerymen (see this topic http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=52409.msg616683#msg616683, etc......
the third dwarf on the right, is an axeman but his hand is cut and reglued into an another position, to fit better with the towershield.

The bows and the arrows hold in the belts are removed with a cutter as usual. The belt is lightly resculpted and the left hand is drilled. A piece of plastic (from the toothpaste tube) is glued into it to make the shield handler.

In the right hand, a hole is drilled to give a weapon to our ex bowman. The axe come from the two handed axemen,  converted into the spearmen of the team but with the blades cut off to keep only one for a hand weapon.
In this way, nothing is lost   8)  i don't like to waste such so expensive material like GW products.

The shields'll be glue after the paintjob .
