Gettysburg in WI

Just thought I'd mention Yankeepedlar's nice article in this month's magazine.
'So do all who see such times. But that is not for us to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that we are given.'

On the way to Historicon?

Sadly, I will be at work until the middle of July.........

Here is the trip we are looking at:

Two days in New York followed by:

Day 1 New York – Boston
Depart New York for historic New England. Travel along the Long Island Sound and Hartford to Boston, Massachusetts, where an early afternoon arrival at the historic Quincy Market will be followed by a sightseeing tour. Begin with a walking tour along the Freedom Trail to view such sights as the Boston Common, the Granary Burial Grounds, the Old State House, Faneuil Hall and the State House. Walk the cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill, one of Boston’s oldest neighborhoods. The evening is at leisure.
Day 2 Boston – New England – Québec City
This morning travel through the New England states of New Hampshire and Vermont on your way to Canada. You will pass small villages and drive through the picturesque White Mountains, particularly beautiful during the fall foliage. In the late afternoon, cross the U.S./Canadian border to enter the province of Québec. This evening, take the opportunity to sample some of the celebrated French cuisine (optional).
Day 3 Québec City – Montréal
Begin the day with a tour of Québec City, the French capital of the province and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Highlights include the Québec Provincial Parliament Building and the Citadelle. Then enjoy a walking tour of the walled city, where you will see the Chateau de Frontenac, as well as unparalleled views of the Saint Lawrence River. Take in some shopping and lunch before leaving for Montréal. Upon arrival, go on a tour of Old Montréal, the area known as the “Vieux Port,” with stops at Place Jacques Cartier and Notre Dame Basilica. The evening is at leisure.
Day 4 Montréal – Ottawa – Toronto
Depart Montréal for the capital of Canada, Ottawa. This vibrant city of parks and flowers boasts one of the most impressive parliament buildings in the world. In the afternoon, continue along the Thousand Islands Parkway to the largest English-speaking city in Canada, Toronto, located on the shore of Lake Ontario. This evening is at leisure to enjoy dinner and perhaps do some shopping in the well-known Eaton Center.
Day 5 Toronto – Niagara Falls
Begin the day with a drive through Toronto’s business district to see its impressive collection of modern skyscrapers, most notably, the CN Tower, the world’s tallest free-standing structure (1,815 ft./553 m). Continue along Lake Ontario, crossing the Welland Canal, before arriving at Niagara Falls, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy this natural wonder. Stroll along Table Rock and view the thundering water of the Horseshoe Falls. Perhaps take an optional tour on the renowned Maid of the Mist boat ride at the base of the Falls.
Day 6 Niagara Falls – Gettysburg – Amish Country
Today ride through the rolling farmland of upstate New York, known as the Finger Lakes Region, and enter the Keystone State of Pennsylvania. This afternoon, visit the historic Gettysburg Civil War National Battleground, site of the largest battle ever fought on American soil, and the place where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous address in 1863. Travel along the Susquehanna River to South Pennsylvania for overnight.
Day 7 Amish Country – Washington, D.C.
Travel through rural countryside to Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Visit an Amish Museum and see their 300-year-old tradition of simple living (admission included). The Amish people live in a world that stopped in the mid-1850s. They use no electricity, mechanical devices, or modern equipment. In the afternoon, continue to the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.

I sometimes visit Grangetown (near Middlesbrough) and now see they must be Amish too, as nothing there has changed there for about a century.

That's not quite true, the tracksuits are at least from the 80s.  ;)

That's what I thought, like most Brits, I've only been to Florida, this is a chance to see a lot in a few days, ending up, amazingly, in the same hotel we were in the first time we went......

I've only been to Massachussets, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Boston is great. I'd love to go to Gettysburg though.

Quebec old city is great. Near the chateau (roughly opposite) there is a great shop selling a stunning range of toy soldiers. (Ever the gamer always on the lookout for something for gaming).

Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

Hoping to visit Gettysburg in the Summer .......  :D :P :-*

I was there last week
Had a superb time. I'd have a look at the visitor centre first and the cyclorama before visiting the battlefield

when you are ready for the battlefield I'd suggest you hire a guide - the chap that took me was superb and also drove my rental - there are a range of tours from 2-5 hrs

Keep away at the time of the battle's anniversary -they are expecting huge numbers of visitors
