How do I make a 'shatter' in 'glass'??
« on: 10 May 2013, 02:38:53 PM »
Hi All,

I'm using HO Scale railroad building kits to build my 20mm Zombie Town.  I bought a KFC fast food kit and it has lots of nice 'glass' doors on the front and sides.  Since I'm thematically placing this town in the first week - 2 of the 'epidemic', I think that this glass would definitely been abused in one or more areas.  Any ideas how I can actually model glass being shattered by say a concrete block?

Thanks!

Try a coat of varnish & while still 'wet' dry it with a hair dryer, this will result in 'crackling' on the surface. Next a wash of thin black (or a good coat of black acrylic which you quickly wipe off) will give the impression of 'shatter' . You can go a stage further & pick out a section or two in solid black to show missing bits.
Art shops also sell 'crackle varnish' (to give the impression of old oil paintings) which you also might consider.

Perhaps cutting out a jagged section where a brick went through and making crack lines with a marker?

I have seen "crack" decals somewhere but I don't remember the scale.

Simply scratch the cracks into the surface using a needle with a very fine point.
Costs nothing and looks way better than decals.

I think the mistake I made was trying to use an exacto knife and not a needle....

If you go mad at a piece of clear plastic with a knife you can get a decent cracked smashed effect....

Just do a bundle of cuts in one direction, then a bundle of cuts in another. Viola!

Andy have you got a slightly larger picture?  o_o

The varnish being speed dried is a great idea, as is scribing with a pin or knife, you can also paint it on.

When you say 'glass', do you mean they're transparent, or are they just areas of the full, opaque kit pieces?

Assuming the kit is opaque. ;)

Cheers Andy!  Looks GREAT!  And tons of other detail ideas to steal as well! :)

I love looking at other people's work and as I pick up all these interesting little things I can't help but think...."smart bugger.....awesome ideas!"

Ah, and by 'glass', I did indeed mean plastic.  I just got some BEAUTIFUL buildings yesterday for my 'commercial district', and both come with clear plasticard for the windows.  I'd like to do some busted out, not Watts 65' kind of damage, but say Zombie Apoc Day 10.
