Help with my forum
« on: April 23, 2008, 04:20:08 PM »
Hey guys,

I've been wanting to re-add a forum onto my site, and have occasionally tried, only to be bombarded with spambots over and over again. I have had litarally 40-50 sign up a day.

Being the computer genius I am, I can't figure out how to get rid of them. :freak:

If I add a forum to my site, would anyone here be willing to set it all up proper with some kind of tool to root out the evil and keep them from ever being seen. I don't have time to babysit a forum and I certainly don't have the knowledge required to even use a computer ( i use mine when no ones looking) :D

There would be some fine loot in it for you.

Cheers,

Eric

I have phpbb as my default from the webhost I use. I did notice that when ever I install it, it's always a older version.

I was never able to figure out how to update it. I know, I know...

phpBB is not reliable, I know, this forum here is a phpBB one and i had really problems with spam users, now i've found a way to keep away most bots and have reduced the succesfull spam sign up's to 3-5 daily.

I'm switching at the moment to the Simple Machines software, great engine with much more features and a bit easier to install and handle. Would recommend you too.

If you decide to keep the phpBB, I can tell you some tricks and maybe that will help as well.

I just want a working forum, with no trouble.

Where can I find this other forum you mention and can a technology challenged individual use it?

just take a look:

http://www.simplemachines.org/

if you're able to use phpBB so you'll be able to use SimpleMachines for sure :-) it's really easy and very user friendly.

Have to agree we moved from phpbb to smf and its better. You can also find a ncie add on which brings in a COPRA text system, it means its really hard for a bot to sign up as they can't read the text to input it.

I use phpbb as well and am searching for a new host and may switch to simple machines.

However, getting rid of spam sign-ups is really easy. I went from 10-12 a day to 0 in 7 months. All you need to do is add a question to the registration process. Most of the spam bots hit an unknown field and blow up. I added the question: What color is the sky? (hint:blue) and all my spammers went away.
