Thank you for the well-wishes everyone!

We had a full summer, with plenty of role-playing, wargaming, building and painting to post. I am busy compiling words and pictures for several battle reports to bring the website up-to-date. (Our daughter has been asking when her game reports will be up there and when a 15-yo wants pictures of playing with her parents and friends online, I want to oblige!) The poor crew from the League of Nil-ith Horn Chronicles is definately getting the short end of the AAR stick, with 9 sessions played and only 2 reports posted. That will be remedied soon, as they are on the verge of adventure #10 and we like to go big for games that end in "0".

All of your feedback is super encouragement to keep the reports rolling, so thank you again!

Hi again all! Before we get to the climactic Sagas of the Gautrian Kings #50, I'd like to introduce you to our daughter's gaming group. You may recognize a couple of faces from our Fantasy Warriors gaming (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=54368.msg800263#msg800263). The group has played a few times over the last year, all the players are re-enactors/ junior docents at a local historic house.

This adventure was just the girls. Our daughter's character is Meav, a potential druid. Her friends play Alanna and Maria Modrak, sisters whose older brother marched off to campaign with Kvig Melgarson several years ago. (They don't like Kvig for enticing so many of the young men away.)

They began with a little swordplay practice, then they were off to the Upplands Althing.

Alanna and Maria participated in the traditional games.

They played at combat with wooden weapons, and were the last ones standing!

Meav waited for nightfall, when the priests would gather the new hopefuls.

She showed promise in the ways of plants and animals. The creepy old Bone Woman showed strange interest in Meav, but the other priests sent her away.

Later that night, Uttar, the priest of snakes came to meet Meav.

“You have much potential, young one,” he said to Meav. ” For your magickssss to blosssssssssssom you need your own Mana Sssssssstone. You musssssssst travel to the Tomb of Freya to find it. Take only thossssssssssse you trussssssssssssssssst.”

Uttar held a bag towards Meav. A small snake uncurled itself from Uttar’s wrist, slithered along the bag and up Meav’s outstretched arm. “Follow thisssssssssss inssssssside.”

“A warning for you before you go: the old Bone Woman fearsssssss you, and what you could become. Beware her and her followerssssssssss; they are dangerousssssssssssssssss folk.” Then Uttar slipped away into the night.

Meav and her friends set off right away. The full moon made it easy to find their way to the Tomb of Freya.

Uttar's snake led them inside.

What dangers await our young adventurers in the Tomb of Freya? Can Meav find her Mana Stone?

Come to the website to see more pictures and read the full report:

YET ANOTHER FINE story backed up by LOVELY photos, but the really outstanding thing is seeing the next generation carry on a pastime & a way of life that we've come to love. VERY WELL DONE on all counts!

Are those tents scratch-built?

I think I need me some - and also some corner-, and edge hills. Such nice features (and it's about time I apply my expensive thermo-cutter to some gaming stuff)

Actually, on these lines, I am also thinking of making a Mordor-Orodrúin board with a slope leading up towards the back edge, and then have a large picture of Mount Doom as back-drop. Project for later this winter, methinks. I still have the barbarian/orc hall project pending.  ::)

Wery well choice of name for that priest btw.; Uttar is phonetically close to adder (at least in Old Norse)  :)
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Thank you Nala! It's been lots of fun gaming with the next generation. It's great to see the excitement on their faces, and the play that they give, all with the toys and stories we make. And all playing a pasttime many thought computers would kill. I've found that the more popular computer RPGs, Skyrim in particular, have groomed these folks for something bigger- tabletop gaming!

Argonor- the tents are in fact scratch-built. You can find a tutorial on our website:

http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/workshop/tents/

or there is a thread on the workbench too if you prefer:

Break out that thermo-cutter and hobby knife! It's funny how much foam we cut in the winter too. Just the weather for ample ventilation.

Model on!

Thank you - I'll definitely have to look through all your pages for inspiration when I start my endeavours to bring my scenery up to par with my miniatures collection.

Another engaging game report on your inspirational set up. As the Small Faces once said, it's all too beautiful.

I've also developed a habit of trying to identify the models in your reports. Is that snake one of the Dark Eye ones? The wolf's got me beaten, though.

Now that you mention, the rugged terrain matches the combatants perfectly...in addition to being BEAUTIFULLY modeled & painted.

Thanks rumacara! The scenery is lots of fun to make, a real get-your-hands-in-it project:

Ahh, that's because it's an old Ral Partha from one of the ElfQuest box sets. It's a very slight sculpt, even by the old 25mm standards. Small Faces indeed! A beautiful series of minis, by Julie Guthrie. The Old Bone Woman and the priest with the gray hair are from that series too.

I think the snake is also Partha, again an old set, this one "Familiars". I'll check with the big guy later, he's deep in prep right now.

Thanks guys. I'll try to get a series of pictures together to show just how functional the cliff pieces are. Teshub set up "hidden" areas in this tomb that were revealed by shifting the large landscape pieces little bits at a time, then removing entire layers. I have lots of pictures and 2 great battlereports from this set-up and I still didn't do it justice. It was great on game night.

Speaking of game night, the SGK crew is due here in about an hour! Game on!

Jevenkah, thanks for the link.
Indeed lots of fun specially when we make it in group.
Its giving me some ideas but unfortunatelly space is not what i have available at the moment or else i would loose my head and make lots of scenery for its one of the hobby parts that i enjoy most.
Keep it coming.

We are most blessed with great space in and around our house. We do have storage right under the game table, but that's mostly filled with buildings now. The scenic pieces are surprisingly easy to store, if one has a place to put mid-to-fair sized plastic boxes. The hills are no more than a couple inches tall so they can fit on top of each other in a box. The cliff pieces are long and thin and they sandwich in a smaller box nicely as well. We constructed roughly regular shapes for versatility in modelling and storing.

So this:

is actually this:

Our figure collection, however,  is getting harder to store. We have all the good spots on the walls filled with curio cases, so Teshub recently made troop trays for armies that fit into a glass-front cupboard behind the counter. 8 trays fit inside allowing Teshub to set up armies and keep some hidden until the proper reveal time in game. Recently (in episode #48) our scouting patrols had gone something like this:

Bleddyn: (makes his scouting roll) "How big is their force?"
Teshub: "You think there could be 8 units marching through."
Me: (walks over to the counter where King Magnus' troops are ready to be deployed and starts counting) "I put it at more like seven."

We were losing a little of the drama. Now there are entire units Teshub can "hide" in there that we won't notice on game night.

Can you spot the new unit of ulfhednar? Our players couldn't and were surprised when Teshub brought them out freshly painted after Bleddyn had given them to him the session before this one.

Rumacara, I know what you mean about getting carried away. We have a habit of building first and finding storage later.

Thanks for all the positive encouragement!
