Looking for advice on Boars....
« on: May 27, 2013, 02:07:06 PM »
Howdy all,

In my efforts to add to my Greenskins forces I have become enmaoured with the 4th edition savage Orc sculpts by the Perry Brothers...and have now managed to tack most of them down.  My most recent addition are copies of all 5 boar boy sculpts....and they are just as full of character as the infantry models....except for one thing....

....those god awful things that GW tried to pawn off on us as "boars" in the this time period....Christ they are horrible!  My 5yo actually asked "what is that daddy?" When I pulled one out of the box....when I responded "it's a boar". She said "no it's not.....that's a boar" and pointed to one of my marauder boar riders....

....so I decided to try and mount them on some spare 3rd edition boars.  And I need to know if you think they work.  Here is one of the rank and file troops...with the abomination in the back ground

As you can see orcs have grown quite a bit in 4th Ed....but I think this works for me...I had to bend his legs in a bit...and I may need to GS a few gaps around the saddle...but it works.

...where it gets. Bit dodger is with the champion...who is even bigger

From the front

Maybe his pig could be bulked out a bit with some shrunken heads and other spoils of war?

Here is the unit

What do you think?  Can you suggest other boar options?

Cheers,

Blue

They look ok to me but would possibly be better if bigger?   Only option I can think of is the original armored Marauder ones which I think are bulkier but probably shorter.  There are some in my attic ::)

I think these work quite well and I certainly don't mind that they might look a bit small. It lends more of an air of realism (I know, orcs...).

Bulk them out with gear rather than having larger bodies  8)

cheers

Otherworld Giant Boars ( http://otherworldminiatures.co.uk/?s=giant+boar&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&post_type=product )

Could've sworn Ral Partha has some of the old DSA or Armalion boars without riders, but couldn't find them.
There's these though: http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/4518-gar%C3%82%E2%80%99arryd-3-cavalry-p-2714.html , while Demonworld is 15mm, those boars should be 'normal' sized (~ 28mm).

Pigs do look like they work. If you'd say they're still half-wild instead of domesticated, then that might explain why they're smaller.
For the champion, maybe adding a padded blanket over the saddle might work/ help to bulk out that piggy or paint the blanket as a flag (trophy)?

I think the scale/size of the boars looks fine. I like the ideas of trophies, too. How about a kill or dinner for later slung over his neck?

They look alright, but like you say perhaps a little small. I struggle to imagine them charging being sooverloaded by big orcs. The otherworld boars could be an option, but I've no idea of size.
