Our Club's summer Fantasy Skirmish campaign starts next month and my Reaper Bones Kickstarter Package has not arrived. So I've had to improvise alternate figures to build my "Bad Guy" warband.  Luckily a visit to the Little Wars convention netted me quite a bit of old Fantasy Lead, so I'm building my forces (for Song of Blades and WarEngine) almost entirely from my Little Wars Haul.

First up I've got a batch of Grenadier Chaos Knights.  I'm working up a blog post with more pics and info, but for now here they are.

I have painted 7, but there are only 5 sculpts.  Really neat figs though, and it looks like (in addition to Mirliton) Forlorn Hope games is now offering these figs again at bargain prices, though they have oddly been renamed and displayed in the good-guy'ish "Men" section.

They received my usual fast and dirty tabletop paintjobs.
-Prime
-base colors
-A bit of drybrushing (metal and fur)
-Brush-dip with Minwax Polyshades Tudor
-Re-drybush the bases
-Matte spray

The integral bases are hidden with "Fireplace Cement and Mortar" and pieces of pine bark are pressed into it.

Their leader is a 1989 GW Chaos Champion figure. I'll post pics of him soon.

Cracking paint work and it's really difficult not to like the old Grenadier sculpts and especially their chaos warriors.

First and foremost: Welcome aboard, eilif!
 :)

Dijit is right: Ya gotta love the old Grenadier stuff.
Nice warband in the making.
What a great way to introduce yourself!

You did a fine job of handling those reds and the basing job you gave them is excellent :-* :-* Fine looking figures :D :D

Thanks for the kind words folks. As to the basing, it's easy as pie and cheap as anything. Smooth on some of the fireplace mortar and press bits of bark into it. It's actually alot of fun to do, so I'm going to do all the minis in this warband like this.

PatrickWR just put up the blog post about the figs here:
http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2013/05/painting-up-old-school-chaos-fantasy.html
More pics, sourcing info for Grenadier fantasy warriors, etc. if you're interested.

But most importantly, I can now show you the leader of this unit:

Nice Cancerous shoulder tumor, this guy needs an Oncologist stat!

I don't recall what random lot he arrived in, but for some reason I kept him around. He arrived with a somewhat mangled left hand that had been drilled out for a weapon that was long gone.  A large plastic shield (acquired at Little Wars) covers it up nicely.

He looks great and fits the warband very well!

(Oh, and as Mason drew my notice to it - welcome to the board too!)

Ooooh!

I like him.
In a weird 'he's a bit of an ugly, scary bastard' kind of way, of course....

Nice simple conversion making him into a completely unique mini and a great leader for the gang.

Great unified theme there on your force the dirty red colour works really well and the painting on the mutated arm is very well done. Great work.

As several folk have already mentioned "Nice reds!" I felt I needed to say it too, since that color can be such a tricksy thing. And I love your basing, both final outcome and the clever construction.

Welcome! I've been by your group's blog and it looks like a fun crew. I'm looking forward to seeing more!

Thank you all for the kind words.  You'll be pleased to see that this journey is not over yet...

More Servants of the Black Crown!

I painted up some calvary and some soft troops for our summer Fantasy Campaign.
More pics, fluff and info/sourcing for the figs here:
http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2013/06/night-herons-of-black-crown-part-2.html
These figs all came from the same bin-o-lead at Little Wars as the Grenadier Chaos warriors above.
Some half-elf Tribesman

Their Shaman

And a pair of Half-beastman calvary

Can you tell which figures these are? (before checking the blog)

These are some great additions.
Especially those Half-Elven Tribesmen.

Now I need to take a trip to your blog to find out where they are from.

Gotacha!
I knew the Lead adventure members couldn't resist such the enticement of ID'ing  old minaitures!

Song of Blades and Heroes will be the main ruleset, but we're also going to run a few battles of slightly larger size using "WarEngine" .  I'm even tempting a couple of the members in the direction of trying Kings of War.
