Playmobil Barbarian / Viking Long Ship
« on: May 29, 2013, 01:33:19 AM »
Here are some pics of my new dragon boat.
Just the Playmobile viking ship with a balsa deck and RPG safe mast.

Now to finish the crew!

Someone over on TMP asked how;

First I got a cheap one off eBay as all I wanted was the hull. Then I took off the head and tail for separate priming and painting. Then I pulled up the plastic floor and threw it away. Next I used a hacksaw to cut off the oarlocks and sanded the side tops smooth. The I primed and painted the hull. Then I made a new deck out of foam core which I then covered with thin strips of balsa I painted beforehand. I carved a chunk of wood I had drilled a hole in to hold the mast. Glued the chunk in place but left the pole removable. I may do some rigging but feel it is find for gaming without. I then reattached the freshly painted head and tail and started shopping for barbarians.  :)

Enjoy

Fantastic conversion!

I joined my gun with pirate swords, and sailed the seas of cyberspace.

This is fantastic! Great conversion; I'm familiar with the ship as we had the same idea, but brand new it was way too expensive. Nice work with the balsa deck as well!

lol Love that line. But it is important to keep in mind one's ultimate purpose: lots of open space to put the loot.

Can't wait to see some barbarians on the ship!

That looks really good. I have passed on that ship a couple of times because I thought it looked big & out of scale. But now seeing what you have done I am going to have to rethink this as a posible project.

Thank you everyone for your kind words.

...I thought it looked big & out of scale. ...
I agree its too out of scale for historical vikings, but I think it sizes just right for a Fantasy Barbarian Dragon Ship.

... brand new it was way too expensive. ...
Yes they are pricey. It took awhile of hunting on ebay to find a used one cheap. With S&H I paid less then $20 for it, which is less then what the laser dream longboat runs or the model plastic kits. I didn't care that this one didn't have the mast or other parts. I even priced Playmobile longships on ebay from England and German where they seem to go really really cheap [Lucky Sots  ;) ]but the S&H made it too much. I've also had wild ideas about the Playmobile Roman ship and the Egyptian one, but didnt find either cheap enough before I stopped looking.

Awesome conversion! regretfully Doreen II wouldn´t be a proper name for a Viking boat...  :DIndeed playmobil is a great source of inspiration and supplies.

Cool. I have got one of these in the loft. You have inspired me to convert it into a ship for my lord of the rings force.

Wonderful work on that Playmobil Viking ship, perfect for Fantasy adventures now  :-*

I have had a Playmobil Pirate Ship (red one, if there's a difference between the different colours) for some years now, waiting for similar modification project... maybe I will now get an inspiration from this.
