Will definitely want to hear more about your adaptations using LoTR CAB; I'll be PM'ing for a copy shortly. Combat system in the original board game seemed optimum for team play at breakneck speed,  but I've been wrong before. Oh, have I been wrong before...  ::)

After seeing a ATTIW as a con game DECADES ago, I built a reactor room in a drawer; basically a box with a handle, I covered the floor with plastic window screen, squeegeed modeling putty for floor tile borders, and put bits of trash here and there for the terrain. I still get asked to trot it out fairly regularly, though it's in disrepair for sometime.

One thing I found was allowing too much table talk slowed things appreciably, so I instituted an alternate 'bonus bug' rule. Say anything other than 'run', 'shoot', or 'duck', aside from the obligatory Hudson whines (and EVERYBODY does those), and you might find a bug in your bonnet. I wasn't strict, mind you, but everybody got into the spirit.

Which, if you think about it, 'run' 'shoot' 'duck' (leave me a path, to run or flame) is about all you need to say. ;->=

Edit: As far a 'cheap-and-cheerful' terrain, have you looked at print your own? If you're in an office or school with liberal policies on using printers, you can whip some fine corridors with stuff from RPGNow, or freely downloads elsewhere. I keep a packet of cardstock in the locker for just such occasions.

Can we see this reactor room drawer please? I'm always in the mood to see anyone's Aliens terrain, no matter what state it's in.

Well I got into a stall mode when my 40 25mm round GW bases that I bought on e-bay got lost in the mail.
That put the rebasing back and I had to order more that should be here next week, I hope (crossing fingers now).

So I started to do my preliminary drawings to set what scale I want for the terrain. I would love to do the whole colony at LV 426 but now I see the scale at 25-28mm is huge and will take at least a 11 foot x 11 foot table. However I may still start small with a unit or 2 to this scale.
No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck.

Okay, crappy camera image, assuming I can link it proper from my LAF gallery...

My original walls were flame-sculpted bead foam sheets, and, given possible poisonous gases, a really stupid way to go, but looked pretty kewl. Sir Randall (VSF_Gamer) decided a proper job should be made of it after the brittle styro began to flake off, and replaced same with wood strips and Sci Fi Supply Wild Walls.

Floor grid was plastic window screen with 'lines' laid of model putty, all sprayed GRAY (not black), then placed on black-painted wood sheet, in turn attached to drawer 'frame'.

Always thought there should be a 'lid' for transport, and the extra space could hold the figs and paperwork, but that was just a good idea.

@ The Beast, Very nice, reactor in a drawer, interesting concept. Is there a desk or something that this will slide into?
You must have been posing this as I was trying to post at the same time as I got a frozen PC when I was uploading a map.

Here is what I came up with as far as scale for "Hadley's Hope" copied the print from the net and put 6 inch grid lines on in paint.

Just to be clear, an oh-so-seldom occasion for me, this is an attempt to make a 3d version of the board game first scenario map.

I was even going to cut out the hole in the center, and put a small tray for dice rollng (gets pretty crowded with ten people crowding around), and paint the sides with forced perspective of the central shaft, as the original had on flat paper.

Yes, I'm full of big dreams. Well, full of something...

True 3D, say on cheap plastic shelves, has crossed my mind with crawling bugs, but more for Space Hulk.

@Miniman. Thanks for the referral. That is pretty much the scale I came out too also. That drawing differs from the actual model used in several ways but is fairly accurate. I believe the drawing is based off the see through blueprint seen in the background in the Ops scenes.   Would also like to hear more about this LoTR adaptation.

@Doug. Love the idea of a board in a drawer.

It's been a while. I have been building, basing and painting so now I finally have some pics to share. First both sets of Leading edge Colonial marines rebased and pretty much finished

Those Leading Edge Colonial Marines and Aliens look sharp. You've done a fantastic job on the bases too. It took me forever to get the bases to look right on my project, and they don't look as nice as yours. It's a very impressive set.
Oh, and now I have to base the eggs, because yours look so good. Damn.

This means a lot coming from both of you. I have admired your work and spirit that you both convey.

@Sgt.Scream;  Thanks and back at you.

@Michka; Yes getting those bases right was not easy as you have mentioned on your post. Especially the aliens however your post helped guide me. I actually used a hack saw and vise to surgically remove the original bases. I am not totally happy with the painting on the bases. I really like those bases our friend Sgt. Scream has on his aliens especially the way he painted them.

I am fairly happy with the marines painting. Here is a closer pic.
