Mounted Cowboys??
« on: 31 May 2013, 07:25:56 PM »
All,
I love my Black Scorpion minis, but they are woefully short on mounted figures, having only 7, counting the Preacher and the Bandito.  Looking at Knuckleduster, I see that they have 14 mounted in their 28mm range.  How outragoeusly differently would they look with the Black Scorpion FOOT Cowboys?

Knuckleduster are quite small in my opinion - smaller than Artizan, Foundry etc.  However, when using mounted figures the difference will be a little less noticeable.  I've actually chopped up a box of Perry Civil War cavalry to get a bunch of mounted figures.  lol  They don't look great but they work, and you get a bunch in a box, so I'm a little cheap I guess.

Ooh, I never thought of using the Perry figures, thanks for that!

Honestly it's a reasonable budget solution, but you're limited in poses/outfits.  You do have some nice hats...though you have to trim off the sabres which are included on each figure.  For quick cheap easy plastics they work okay.  I have two more which I quite like that I'm doing now.  Also, many of them have large cavalry boots.

I'll also be using some of these horses solo for dismounted stuff....and might even use a few to make some wagon teams.  I tend to skimp on details when I find something which is nice and budget-friendly. :D  I picked up a pack of Renedra 40mm bases (from Architects of War I think...) for my new mounted figures.

I agree on the Perry stuff to make mounted cowboys. I've put my Confederates together to be a stand-in for either option.

Yes using the charging Confederate bodies ( with waistcoats) should give more options for cowpokes. What about Mexican federales ?

I heard the new confederates were a good bit bigger in scale - do the bodies match up at all with the older cavalry set?

I bought some of the Litko Horse bases, you set a mini on them to show they are mounted. It's not  pretty like a model, but very pratical in the long run. Going to order more in the near future for games. Saves a ton of money to have to buy mounts, paint them and such, instead I can paint more figs on foot.

I don't do duplicate models (as cool as that would be).  So my mounted figures are often representing a variety of other figures...and sometimes just themselves.  I plan on doing some train-robbery scenarios when my train is done, so I will have 7 painted mounted figures, enough for the scenario at least.

The ideal solution is West Wind's Cowboy Wars range - mounted and dismounted version of the same characters.

Wargames Foundry also reset all of their prices - they sell a TON of mounted/dismounted character, at very reasonable prices.

I have Foundry's mounted figures and they are tasty.  They will be my go to for that because they sell the foot and horse versions of the model in the same blister.

Yep, and it's something like $15 for a pair of characters (both on foot and mounted).  If I wasn't nearly set for minis I'd definitely be looking into them.

I may just end up sticking with the Black Scorpion models.  If I add in the two mounted women, there are 9.  That should be more than I'd need for any scenario.

Turn the big cavalry boots into chaps with Green Stuff?
