Storage Tank Project (aka Arcturus the Riveter)
« on: June 08, 2013, 01:40:15 PM »
Hello Guys,

recently the local discounter sold some snacks in nice round tubes which seemed perfectly sized for 28mm Storage Tanks. So i decided to build some. Planned are 8 Tanks in 3 different themes.

Here's a pic of the raw material: The tubes are approximaltely 15cm high and have a diameter of 8,5cm.

First step was to insert a sturdy cardboard disc on tp to get a level ground.

I decided to go for an overall segmented and riveted look. So i ordered 1,200 Rivets, glued some cardboard strips on the tubes and began drilling holes (each Tank needs approximately 110 Holes + the according number of rivets glued in)

Rivets:

Rivet Strips:

The three themes will be Hatch, Grated Hex, and 80mm fan. Here are the first two Themes:

Hatch: The Hatches are on their way from the US:

The Hatch Theme will receive a Poseidon Energy Logo:

Grated Hex:

The Grated Hex Theme will receive a NW Disposal Systems Logo:

The 80mm fans are still on their way too. But i hope to receive them next week! This theme will receive a Vault tec Logo:

And to finish this first post here are some detail shots:

I plan to use these Storage Tanks for Fallout, Dust Tactics, Warzone resurrection and Deadzone.

Hope to post further WIP shots and photos of finished pieces with minis for scale comparison soon.

Any comments are very welcome!

I'm liking it. Good generic industrial scenery can be used in so many settings.
Theres more 28mm Superhero Madness at my blog, http://fourcoloursupers.blogspot.com/
And for Ultra-modern Wargaming check out Hotel Zugando at http://ultramoderngaming.blogspot.co.uk/

Very nice - I was currently (as in the last 15 minutes) going through Google image search looking for 28mm water tanks as I want to build one too. The rivets are insane though. Insane.

Now you may like doing rivets this way and they are great but there are some really nice 3D rivet decals you can get from train stores they look really good too. and easier...just saying :D

Thanks for the nice comments

Well, i never heard of "3D Rivet Decals" before. Next time i will use these for sure. Thanks for the hint bandit86.

What colors would you suggests for the Tanks?

I'm considering white, very light blueish green, light grey, yellow or a light German field grey from Foundry Paint System. Or of course some sort of metallic color at least for the tanks with the 80mm fans on top. It has to be a color which will give a nice contrast when applying orange/red brown rust.

Three different colors for three themes. So what do you think?

Cool project !
You can also find rivets and nut/bolts in modelling supplies e.g. http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/

They (white / blueish green / light grey) sound great. Contrasting colours in the logos, etc will make them pop.

Hey,

the first tank is finished. I'm not 100% satisfied with the weathering but i think it will do.

C&C welcome and much appreciated.

I like it. The weathering is fine - particularly on the decal.

I haven't decided on the top for my one that I'm sketching up. I was going to go with a railing all the way around, but I like the loop hand rails you've got.

The rust looks pretty convincing, and the logo looks pretty legitimate, well done. I think the hex looks a little "plonked" on top. Could you recess it by building up the area around it more?

Cheers
Matt
