Looking for dinosaurs...?
« on: July 12, 2013, 06:56:22 AM »
I need help finding some good dinosaur models to paint for an upcoming project in 28mm. I'd like a T-rex, a Triceratops, and maybe some Pteradactyls.... Anyone have some suggestions?

I'd look through eBay for dinosaur toys. Eureka Miniatures also has a little (and some will need converting):

Tamiya (the model company) do a nice triceratops which is usually dirt cheap. They do a good T-Rex as well. I dont know if they scale to 1/35 but they look right to me.

Pictures of them in use in this thread - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=55741.0

Ral Partha Europe for Tyrannosaurus, Pteranodon, and Dennis Mize naked Velociraptors. Reaper for Triceratops, bootiful Dennis Mize Carnotaurus, and more Dennis Mize naked raptors.

Or if you really want to splash the cash, some pretty good palaeoartists (and one or two not-so-good) sell their wares on Shapeways. Not so much compatibility with 28mm - there are a few 1/40 sculpts that might fit better with chunky 32mms, but will still be a bit oversized. But then you might want that anyway. ;)

Ah, if only David Krentz put up a few in 1/56...

Not even for the time; but it's extremely minor niggles and miles better than the last one. ;)

I use the Schleich and CollectA dinosaurs. Easy to get and cheapish, and no painting required :)

I remember very well when the newer Tamiya Dinos came out in the 90ies and replaced the old series. I can't think of better modelled or more accurate naturalistic depiction, with skin and muscle detail, and also good dynamics. Alas a restricted diversity.

Of course the future will bring more accurate reconstructions (like the feather discussion) but only minor ones. The big jump has been done with the dinosaur renaissance, and I personally find it quite interesting to observe artifacts of research mirrored in plastic models at the accuracy level thatTamiya produces. Besides, painting feathered dinosaurs is a real pain in the ass  ;)

Anyway, for our wargaming purposes I cannot find a better price-quality tradeoff than the Tamiya plastics. After all, we only do Lost Worlds and the like and not "Walking with Dinosaurs" the Wargame. Or did I miss something?   ;) ;)

Well if you want to play WWD: the wargame, innaccurate dinos might fit the bill. ;)

Seriously tho: the dinosaur renaissance was a major leap, but knowledge and depiction of dinosaurs hasn't remained static in the four-odd decades, and not just in whacking some feathers on some of the smaller ones. And it doesn't stop producers, however well-intentioned, from plugging in details that are old, wrong, or plain made-up - including when whacking feathers on some of the smaller ones.

That said, the newer Tamiya dinosaurs are still very good and usable; but I gotta pipe up, partypoop, and say: as long as you know they've still got some influences from Jurassic Park and elsewhere, rather than the known anatomy. (Seriously, the great big wedges on the swollen head of the tyrannosaur...)

I like the Safari Ltd Dinos as well, though you have to be careful about the scale.  At least their catalog lists the scale.  I would keep it 1:40-1:50 and then supplement those from other lines such as HLBPS and Acheson Creations
