Sdkfz 234/2 'puma'
« on: August 02, 2013, 11:59:16 PM »
Following on from my 251/1 link http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=56685.0 I have added the posts from another forum of my first model, the Sdkfz 234/2 'PUMA' I painted for Bolt Action. Here are the posts:

Feel free to ask any questions, I think I am progressing so the 251/1 should be an improvement.  :)

---------------

Hi All,

Well I have started my Puma for my SS, (http://www.warlordgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=9332) this is a 1/48 scale kit from Tamiya the old Italeri kit re-boxed. I did some knocking around on the inter-web thingy for patterns etc. I have not done a model kit in 10+ years and was never any good but I thought I would give it a go.  :?

So here is my attempt at airbrushing:

I have now added 2 coats of filter from AK Interactive and added a pin wash and then tided it up a bit.

The next stage is to add some paint chipping and light scratches, until you are happy with the amount. I have added a fair few I can imagine that the Puma is thrashing its way though under growth  and sneaking into to wood and town scouting for Allied armor.

The colours should tone down a bit more. I may add rain streaks, still have mud and dust to add. I have not used any of these products before, I normally just did drybrush and ink was but want to try and paint it like modelers do.

I hope you like it, please let me know your thoughts.  ;)

-------------

So here is a quick update.

Adding the start of the mud:

I don't want it plastered just some stuck under there from usage.

Here are the wheels:

----------

New Update.

So I have now been working on the crew, I wanted a crew of 2 for this one. The commander exposed commenting to the gunner who has just his head exposed, sort of a narrative.

Here are some bad pictures

Here you can see the excellent decals from Warlord I picked up at the Salute show in London, I used two eagles and an officer rank Untersturmfuhuer. Excellent decals. I used Micro Set and then added a little Matt varnish.

Cheers for looking  ;)

---------------

I took advantage of the nice weather and took some photos.

------------------

So I know I said it was finished, but while working on the Sd.Kz 251/1 I had some weapons spare and thought I should add something to the Puma.

I thought, with the commander out of the hatch, if it was me I would have either a Lugar or MP40 out with me. I am scanning the country side looking for the enemy and what if we get jumped by infantry, better to be prepared, I also add the headset from the radio he put down while chatting about what he see's.

Sad I know, thinking of these little moments

------------

Please feel free to ask and questions, if I was to do this one again there are lots I would do different.

Carabus

Superb. I'm not sure which one I prefer the 251 or the Puma. Both are excellent.

Gee, Thank you guy's  :o :D

There are quite a few mistakes on this one to be honest, but it's a sharp learning curve.

Hello Carabus.

Loving your work. Reminds me of the quality of the hardcore 35th scale Military Modelling boys. In spite of my handle I have never painted any armoured vehicles in anger before, but plan to start a DAK collection (15th, of course) once the Perry / Blitzkreig range gets into full swing. So... may I ask for some advice?

Your refer to filter. What is this? It seems to dull down and soften / merge the colours.
Also love your chipping technique. Could you advise how you achieved this? I tested on an old 72nd scale tank and my chips looked stuck on rather than chipped away like yours. It looks a bit like you paint a scuffed version of the paint then insert the raw metal into that?

Look forward to your next project posts.

Cheers

Always good to see others using 1/48 AFVs for 28mm wargaming! They just look so much better than 1/56th AFVs....at least to my eye! ;)

Beautiful looking vehicle, though the commander looks like something bad is about to happen to him.
