Ship's Grating
« on: 12 May 2008, 09:54:44 AM »
Hi,
Has anyone any ideas to recreate wooden ship grating - the type to cover over the main hold? It would have to be low profile and have lots of square holes!

There are a lot of people offering ships fittings, having online stores and catalogues. There you can find gratings either ready made or in kit form.

Here is an indicative link:

In the above link see amati models and then gratings.

Sorry I could not check the other companies but I am sure there is a lot other.
You may also find other fittings you may like to add.

I used plastic canvas which is a plastic grid used in needlepoint. In the US a 5x6" sheet is only 30 cents and is available at any craft store. It looks to be the same thing as Amati's premade plastic grid in the link above.

I managed to get some from Yvonne at Games of War. Drop them a line as they were considering selling them as singles - webstore@gamesofwar.co.uk.

You can see some samples on their various ships.

The needlepoint sheet sounds very interesting - I wonder do we have them here in Australia?

Here in West Oz we have Spotlight stores which stock that kind of craft item, I will try to see if my local one has any. Need some for my Weapons & Warriors Dhow conversion that is underway.
Cheers,

Saw the stuff in about A3 sized sheets at Spotlight for about $4 I think it was. I bought a smaller sheet with some thread for $2 at dollar shop in Bankstown.

Have not located "plastic canvas" in a local store but have found it on Ebay. Could somebody explain the count number and what is an appropriate count. I am seeing a lot of 14ct - but the grid appears way too small.

14 count is 14 holes per inch.
The plastic canvas I have used for all kinds of projects is 8 holes per inch, so I would agree that 14 would be too fine.

Found a great alternative - $1 fly swatters from a local grocery store!

I would have suggested flyswatters as well as that is what I intend using. However for something  molded you can try Eureka

This is an ancient thread and I suspect the problem was solved long ago, but for what it's worth, it was easy to make one from plastic strip.
