1940 Finnish Infantry in 20mm, Who Makes 'em, please?
« on: 23 August 2013, 08:36:10 PM »
For TFL's new Chain of Command rules I'm looking at doing up some Finnish troops, for throughout the war but starting in 1940.  Who makes, if anyone does, 20mm metal figures for them?  I already checked PSR and there's no review for 1/72 plastic Finnish troops.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Oh, if anyone has English-language translations for infantry tactics the Finns used I'd appreciate a pointer to them, too.  Or native language, there's 15 colleges around here, I can pay an undergrad some bucks to translate them.

Again, TIA.

Eureka Miniatures makes so many miniatures it doesn't surprise me that they make WW2 Finns.    o_o

Foundry do a few as well - part of the old 20mm WW2 range designed by the Perry twins :

They'd add some variety.....when the weapon sizes are the same I like using different manufacturers to get more unique poses, especially when the force is only going to be platoon sized.

For Winter War those would be the usual suspects yes. As a matter of generalisation, 1940 is considered a time of interim peace, even if the the Winter War did extend to that year. So I wasn't sure whether you wanted troops in winter or summer kit. lol

For what it's worth, I think Eureka are better quality to Fantassin. The latter are a bit hit and miss as far as casting & sculpting goes, and of course the rifles look over-sized. But they do add some variation to the mix, and they do have good poses. I have discussed & painted some in my winter war thread on this forum, in case you've missed it? It's mostly Soviet stuff so far, but a little bit Finns too, and I will get more posted, once I get this moving to a new apartment over and done with.

I have various sources in Finnish, but they're mostly old prints that aren't available any more. For example, I got this Finnish Army squad leader's
guide from 1936 which is very neat, full of tactics and info about weapons etc. even if it is slightly pre-war. I imagine they'd make some changes based on their experiences in the war? Found it at a local old books store.

There are 2 sets of 1/72 plastic Finnish troops - by Pobeda and Strelets - and both were reviewed on PSR. Though I admit they look rather terrible.

Strelets is making another set, this time in summer uniforms. You can see the sculpts here: http://www.strelets-r.com/Pages/Set.aspx?SetID=239&M=Z
They look quite nice, though some of them (especially those with Panzerfausts) are not suitable for 1940.

Elhiem has Continuation War Finns planned, but my guess is they won't appear until 2015.  :?
