The House of Spoons (The Arena Floor) 15/10
« on: 26 August 2013, 08:52:47 PM »
I have my first batch of slaves, all ready to be trained up for the arena.

I have one problem, though....I have two Retarius and can only see myself using one.
So: What can I covert the other one into without ordering any more figures?

I am looking for a simple conversion without too much difficulty, but do not mind a little bit of green stuff work.

The figure I have to base it on is the bottom one here:

A nice and convenient pose for the removal of the net, at least.
 ;)

I'd say Laquearius would be the obvious choice.

Replace the net with a lasso/rope...and the trident with a simpler spear?  Other than that, general opinion is that he was a type of retiarius?

Agree totally with Elbows, although there will not be specific rules for Laquearius in Blood on the Sands.

For a more useful type, personally I think he would make a passable Hoplomachus, but would require much more work!

The net could be replaced with a spear, his shield arm would probably need to be lowered and a small shield added, and a helm added of course. His leg and arm guards appear to be ok but would probably require a little green stuff.

He could look something like this in NO time at all.  ;)

The Hoplomachus would be my suggestion also. :)

A Lanista of your considerable talents should be able to Produce him in no time. ;) :D

I love me some Hoplomachi (though I'm becoming less and less enthused as the Skill 5 "Negrix" continues to cut a bloody swath through my ludus...).

Thanks for the Laquearius idea, Elbows, it is an interesting looking option, but a little too close to the Retiarus for my liking.
I think I will go for the Hoplomachus option as it is different to everything else I have.
Thanks for the suggestion feellas, much appreciated.
 :D

Now to get the little grey cells working and get this show on the road.
Research time, methinks.

Good man - can't wait to see him!! If you have any queries on the "get up" - ask away.

I have had a butchers at a few images on the web and there seems to be a little difference on each.

I was going to use the Hoplomachus from this site as inspiration:

Does that seem right to you?

Great site you have found there, but the helmet on the first Provocatur looks like something out of the Muppets lol

Did think it looked a little strange myself, but considering that they are pictures of actual Gladioli re-enactors, I am more worried for the fella inside that headgear!

He seems fine and the helmet is pretty good too.

Pics of the conversion to follow soon I'd say... ;)

Pictures shall be forthcoming, fellas.
I have done the padding on the legs and most of the work on the left greave.
The helmet is about 50% finished, the rim is sorted and basic shape in place.
Toying with the idea of an open-faced helm, though, as the figure has a well sculpted boat race and it seems a shame to cover it.....maybe a ripped off face guard/visor on the base.

Busy with 1:1 scale stuff for the next few days, hope to finish this fella on Sunday/Monday.

Piccies after then.
