Sorry, it has been far too long since an update here! Real life and other gaming projects got in the way  :) However, here's some progress!

Here we go! The next 5 completed:

To mix it up, I having a break from the rank and file and will paint the Standard Bearer and Musician next:

Yes that is a toothpaste tube...... it will (hopefully!) turn into a splendid rotten, tatty flag of Stirland  :D

The unit thus far:

Lovely!
 :-* :-*

So glad that you resurrected this thread so that you could remind me how you did that rust.
 :D

I have some lovely Undead myself, that I am really looking forward to painting at a later date.

Fantastic!! Those look awesome. I would definitely be interested in your painting technique, and especially on how you paint the rust.

The rust was painted as follows:

Base coat of GW Abaddon Black; 2 thin coats of Vallejo Gunmetal Metal; 2 coats of GW Nuln Oil wash to kill the shine of the Gunmetal Metal and finally a mix of Dead Matt varnish and Vallejo Pigment Dark Red Ocre; the varnish obviously dries clear and leaves the pigments showing (you can mix the pigment with coloured paints and water, but you can't then varnish over otherwise the varnish washes the pigment away). It's a really simple but highly effective technique.

The Living Impaired Lads look TERRIFIC...all things considered. The finished pieces are BEAUTIFULLY painted & based, & the W.I.P. ones have potential. VERY WELL DONE!

Thank you kindly! Mason already quoted the Rust technique, are you also interested in how I painted the bones?

Great looking skellies, and my vote goes also for the absurd shield design that the Undead carry around "normally"... yet maybe the necromancer has a big stash of those skull shields ready for his undead hordes :D

What kind of force of rattling bones are you aiming to field?

:D Yes, the life of a Necromancers Intern must be painting skull shields all day, when all he really signed up for was casting spells and going on research trips to Graveyards and Battlefields....!!

Regarding what force... well..... I'm actually a big collector of 'Oldhammer' so anything pre 1990 really. I started to paint these as a 'test'  project to see how the colour palette turned out before I started on pile of old school lovliness that is C17 undead from 1984 - 1987  ;D

I have enough lead to field 2 armies, so my long term plan is a WHFB 2nd Edition using my original Heinrich Kemler as the General and then another but this time 3rd Edition led by a Vampire  :)

Cheers

Another update, as the last one took so long, I thought I'd do two in quick succession!

This is how a piece of toothpaste tube and 2 undercoated models turned in to a Standard Bearer and Musician!

Standard Bearer, depicting the Falling Comet:

Detail of the Standard:

Close up of the Standard:

Here's a unit shot so far:

To tie the models together, I used the same colour palette as I did on the actual bones, Sepia Shade, Umber Shade and Red Shade Vallejo Game Colour washes on the Standard itself and any items of clothing.

Next up I will finish the rest of the troopers before moving on to the unit Champion and Leader.

Cheers

Thank you  :) It was a real joy to paint and as I layered on more washes and started to apply the dried blood it really came to life so to speak!

Another update! It's nearing completion now!

So! Next 5 troopers completed:

I have also begun working on the last trooper and the unit champion:

As I also maintain an interest in the Napoleonic era, I have included a C21 Undead Cavalyman as the units 'officer', which I do like in my Napoleonic units  ;)

I chose this particular rider, as the sculpt on the face is very evil looking, and his weapons of a clever type sword and whip are non too friendly either  :D

The horse is 'Bones' (Sherga) from the original 1986 Death Riders release and I love the pose and the dead bulging eyes!

I still need to do more work on the bleeding eyes, as this is a first coat of the wonderful Tamiya Clear Red X-27.

After these two it's the unit leader, a Lahmian Vampire.

Cheers

Gary
