My WWI British.
« on: 01 November 2013, 11:23:32 PM »
I recently posted photos of my 28mm WWI Germans, here.

Here are my 28mm WWI British, just finished. They are painted to the same standard.

Needless to say, I am very tired of painting khaki-drab.

!!!!!!! Great work  :o
I'm collecting and painting GWMiniatures Brits & Germans too and its taking an age to get through them (I have to keep stopping and moving onto other distractions to give me a break).....can I ask how long - roughly - its taken you to complete the two armies - just so I know what I'm letting myself in for  :(

Regards

I'd hate to put out a number, because even though I posted those threads in relatively quick succession, I tend to paint slowly. I have a busy job, a wife and two small children, and all of the usual demands on my time. Worse, I tend to get side-tracked onto other projects - like any other wargamer.

So with that in mind, painting those British, from bare metal to complete, took about a year. HOWEVER, if I had been diligent and focused, it would have gone much, much faster.

Love both this and the German army you have done.   How did you do the bases?   I have almost painted my WW1 British force but have no idea on where to start on the bases for them.

Do you have terrain for these to fight over?   Would love to see the armies in action.

How did you do the bases?

If you look in the German thread you can see the plain bases without the mud. They're standard GW round bases with a little bit of drywall compound (plaster) used to smooth out the transition between the metal base of the figure and the plastic base. Once they dry I paint them brown.

The mud itself is a gloppy mixture of fine gravel (model railroad ballast), static grass, water, and a brown house paint. The ratio is 1:1:1:1. I throw them all in a cup, stir it together, and glop it onto the bases. Then I level it out a bit, but not too much. It's pretty simple and goes on quickly.

Edit: The bases for the field guns are made out of balsa wood.

Do you have terrain for these to fight over?

That's my next project. I'm using AutoCad to draft plans for a modular terrain table; I figure I'll do it in 2' x 4' sections. I'll make a few plain/flat sections that I can use for other eras (Napoleonics, Ancients) and two sections of trenches.
