People that Time forgot (cool movie)
« on: May 27, 2008, 11:39:42 AM »
I just caught the 1st part of a cool pulpy movie; I’ll have to watch the rest tonight.  A sequel to Land the Time forgot… The People the Time forgot with Patrick Wayne (John Wayne son).  This was made in 1977(I even remember seeing it at the movies) and is very campy but so far is still pretty cool.  So far there is an Artic Ship, a Sea plane, a Princess Lea knock off (Sara Douglas from Superman 2) a pterodactyl. A very health well cared for clean looking Cave Girl (lol) a nutty professor, a side kick and Handsome Hero that all in the 1st 30 minutes. Yes it’s 1977 fantasy with rubber dinosaurs but I think for anyone into pulp it’s a must.  What do you recommend?

The Land That Time Forgot was on TV here in England yesterday lunchtime. A real bit of nostalgia for me as I remember going to the cinema to see it when I was a child. Ropey special effects, filmed on location somewhere in Surrey and a host of well known UK TV stars and Doug McLure. Bloody marvellous :)
I don't however remember the People That Time Forgot.I guess it was more of the same :)

I caught People a week or two ago. I had no idea it existed until I saw it in the listings. It is great campy fun and certainly makes a good excuse to paint up some Copplestone cave people!

This was a trilogy of books by ERB, the third was Out of Time's Abyss.

Sadly, unlike the others, that one didn't get turned into a picture with Doug McClure and some unconvincing rubber monsters.  :'(

Interestingly enough I have been listening to an audiobook of "The Land that Time Forgot" on my iPod at work this afternoon.

Pretty enjoyable stuff. Though the fellow reading it can't do British accents for toffee, and doesn't know how to pronounce 'gunwale'. Also, U33 was built by the Germaniawerft yard in Kiel, not in a private shipyard in California (!). Yes, I can swallow any amount of prehistoric monsters running about, but not this.  :)

The girl is the fiancé of the U-Boat captain in the book too, which seems rather unlikely, and rather unfortunate that he torpedoes the ship that she is travelling to Europe on with the aim of marrying him.

It's jolly good two-fisted fun though, and I am enjoying it. The best thing so far is the name of Tyler's Boche-biting Airedale: Crown Prince Nobbler. Priceless.

Is it one of those free audio books from the web? The quality of those things does vary quite a bit, eh? I listened to a version of Captain Blood from Librivox and some of the accents were just plain horrible. Still, it was better than listening to the thuping base coming out of the headphones of fellow commuters.

No, I paid for it. It was on iTunes.

Didn't know there were free audiobooks on the web. Might be worth looking into.

Try www.archive.org. Tons of legal free music, audiobooks, PDF books, movies, and radio plays. I downloaded hours of the Shadow radio shows from there along with the Scarlet pimpernell, Robinson Crusoe, J.F. Cooper, and others.

This was the one with the pterodactyl attacking the Biplane Flying boat near the begining was'nt it? I did like that scene right type of plane for pulp as I recall! can't remember much about the rest of the movie though.Does anyone have a Canvas eagles stat sheet for a Pterodactyl?   lol

LibriVox has all sorts of stuff - varied quality, but lots of it is quite good.

Three Musketeers is on there; Twenty Years After is in progress; lots of ERB, Tarzan, John Carter, some of the Pellucidar stories... and that's just with twenty seconds of searching on two really obvious author names!

AFAIK, all of the Librivox stuff is also on Archive.org. Convenient as it makes Archive more or less a one-stop shop.
