Mediterranean Galley
« on: November 06, 2013, 05:31:14 PM »
I am looking to expand my Pirate game which currently sits in the 1650-1750 period into the earlier Renaissance period.  Sailing ships of the period are not hard to find/make/adapt but I have come across a blank when trying to source galleys.  Any ideas of who makes a 28mm galley (preferably Turkish/Barbary Corsair) or plans from which I could scratch build something of a similar nature?

Cheers

This is a custom-built late-medieval galley: http://www.flickr.com/photos/funpaintytime/3815233879/lightbox/

I think that you could get pretty nice results by modifying some ancient roman trireme such as these: http://www.grandmanner.co.uk/Roman_War_Ship--product--276.html , although it would require a bigger investment!
Hope it helped!!

Sirolf,

Thanks for the link but I can't afford £80+ for a model and then have to hack it to pieces to rebuild it.

Old Glory has a couple that might work:

The picture is of their Turkish galley.  They also have a Christian one as well

I know man, and I agree with you! Try to look at plastic kits in 1:72 and 1:50 scale, there are several out there. I remember Zvezda produced a Greek trireme.

I wasn't aware of old glory's galleys. They look interesting but they too would need pretty extensive work...

Old Glory Army card = $50 = 40% off, including the boats.

Thanks for all the suggestions for models.  Sadly most of the resin or plastic kits are either far too expensive or require too much conversion to make them playable or both.  :-[  So that line is a dead end. On a bright note I have found some detailed drawings on this site:

http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/a-sasano/english/e-galley_design.htm

I intend to scale them to 1/50 and then design a galley from scratch.  Hopefully the end result will be a set of templates to scratch build a galley from and of course a 28mm Turkish galley!!.   ??? ???  I will post here from time to time as the project progresses and perhaps on the Workbench.
