What have I been up to? Well a bit of painting (ie nowhere near the amount I should've done)

I feel your pain brother. Last month I painted bupkis  :(

Why'd I go for the kind of mud brick look? Uh, because platicard with a brick texture is really expensive (I checked today and holy hell, £8 for an A5 sheet!). It did cost me half of a £5 stick of milliput to make though...

Why not look into Foamed PVC (Forex, Sintra, PALIGHT) ?
Very strong, very light and easy to detail (just draw a pattern with a ballpoint, pressing down hard enough)

I know Antenociti sells the stuff : http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/3mm-white-foamed-pvc.html, but you could always try to get scrap pieces from businesses that create advertisement panels or something like that. (I've been told they sometimes use it)

@ kidterminal

I would have been better off using Spackle, but nah its just plain old millput with a bit of water to smooth it out. Same effect though. Yeah, its foamcore too, which I managed to net off of my club. The stuff was originally sales signs for Currys which, according to the guy who gave it to the club was from when he worked there (...which was ten years ago, so its been sitting there for a while). I'm just covering up the rough edges of the foam with bits of balsa for the moment as it can be fairly crumbly if you don't make the cuts right the first time.

@ zizi666

Hmn, I know this mysterious material of which you speak... Actually I think Poundland might has some in stock. See I'm considering making some textured stuff myself, but its whether the effort makes up for the savings. At the moment what I'm looking for is checkered and brickwork styled sheets, which I suppose aren't so difficult to etch out, so I'll see ...maybe. ...I'm still kind of of the mindset of "if I can't make it out of clay it can't be done" though. ;)

I've worked on the general store a bit there, but I'll leave it till tomorrow until I post anything (as uh, my internet's being crap right now so uploading's a bugger). That and now I'm putting together a second shop, this time maybe a cloths one (I'm not sure, so for the moment it'll be left without furnishings). Its sort of shaping up to look like the blue/green building in the foreground of this screenshot. So far I'm interested on how the large windows and doors that give a view straight through the building will work in games (I'll probably make it a -1 to hit or something if someone does try and shoot all the way through).

Till next time then. Night. :)

I only used it once to build my radio station. That's mostly plain walls, but I did etch a brick pattern in a small part of the front wall :

As said before, I just wrote it with a ballpoint pressed down, so I'm pretty sure you could do a whole wall pretty fast. Also, you can use the same material for floors (see inside pattern) or a sidewalk

@ zizi666

I had a look out for some of that stuff today, but only came across regular foam coated in a hard cardboard (so no good for etching). Something will turn up though. That picture's given me some ideas (for one its a cool building that'd be interesting to use in games), heh, so tah for posting it and the other info. ;)

I ran out of balsa wood again, so had to pop out and buy some more. That means I'm not quite as far along with this stuff as I could be, but hey, I'm still working at a fair pace.

This is where the general store's at right now. I've tidied up the balsa wood a bit and added some more in places. Bar gap filling and adding a few details like light switches this should be ready to paint now. I'm thinking either going for blue or green walls. The furnishings will be painted separately (uh, after I make some more shelves and maybe some other bits), as am I not attaching to the interior partitioning walls for ease of painting.

This is what I put together as the second one. Its roughly twice the size of the first, and has a few changes like not being quite so tall and having lower windows. This is where its at at the moment, and is still short of being finished (hell its still missing two walls as I don't know what to do about the back room yet). Still its coming along, and should look decent when its done. As for what type of shop its going to be, I'm thinking of turning it into a clothes shop. Just shelves along the walls and some empty racks (not glued down of course) hanging about around the middle. Maybe the odd pile of discarded rags in the corners (which shouldn't be too difficult to make). I'm short on vents for the roof, so I may be either making some from scratch or putting in an order with Ainsty Castings for some (I had intended to pick them up at a show a couple of weeks ago, but I had work that day. Yeah, shows are good, but not a day's wages good).

That's where I am with this stuff right now anyway. I'll be making some more later, but for the moment I want to finish these and have them painted. whilst putting together more crap's alwas fun, uh, its a bit useless until its painted. Anyhow, till next time folks. ^^

Does anyone happen to know what the vents on the right hand side of this image are called? The ones beneath the telehpones and above the fans? I've had a trawl of Ainsty Casting's site, but can't seem to find them there. As I couldn't make it to a show two weeks ago I wasn't able to pick some up from their stall their, so I thought that I'd just pick them up online. ...But it would seem that like another few bits (namely the Fallout 3 terminals), they aren't up there. Uh, so I'll probably send an email there way to see if I can pick some up (I mean they had a stack of blisters two months ago), but I'd like to know what these things are actually called first. =/

And well, so as to not make this a total fluff piece I may as well update y'all on what I've been doing. The clothes shop has come along nicely, with most of the exterior done (bar some details) and the furnishing's now being worked on. I'm asking about those ducts things as I think the outside walls need a bit of tat added and some of those would fit the bill. I'll probably post something come monday (possibly the Slavers), but for the moment I have a 7Tv/Fallout game to write up. Toodles. :)

Looks to me like ducts and guess what's on Ainsty's site (without a pic though)  ;)

I wound up sending Ainsty a message regarding them, and yeah the response was just about what you said. Tsk, a blunder on my part perhaps, though that site could be a bit easier to navigate (for one the search box doesn't work, ah, which was the first thing I tried). Still, good products, and I have a half dozen of those duct sets coming my way now (...hopefully those will be enough, but I'm erring on the side of caution with how many of these I'll need). Thanks for looking into that zizi666. ^^

Hmn, today I'm set to maybe paint up a few things. The big plan at the moment however's to write up a scenario and gang profiles for the game I have set for Tuesday. Uh, though that'll be down to me managing to have Open Office work on my laptop, and then going out to buy some ink for my printer come Monday (these past few months since I finished college and no longer could knick ink from them have been hard). Hey, but maybe on Monday I'll have a scour of some charity shops for cool stuff ...or ah, I could be painting crap. Toodles. :)

Ok, shall I call this a temporary update until I can get around to taking some pictures? The past week's not exactly gone to plan on the mini front being that the real world and the horrible behemoth of a social life have been putting themselves in the way. However I should have a post with some of the stuff I've worked on incoming ...just after I've dealt with a pile of paperwork first. Anyway, I say all this just to show that I haven't forgotten about posting here, nor have I entirely been sitting on my butt eating curry all week (that was only on like three days). What has been put together this week is another suburban shop (in this case its the same size of the larger of the two previously posted and has a second floor... well what's left of one), a ruined building (split up over a couple of pieces for ease) and I've painted the brick general store and home. I'm waiting on an order from Ainsty Castings showing up tomorrow, which means I should be able to finish the building of the shops (which I was putting off working on until that order appeared given that its effecting how I put them together).

So yes, this is a bit of a non update, but I felt like this whole board was falling apart in despair over my absence. Uh... which is to say, pics tomorrow and I'll quit my teasing. :)

You have been busy. I was wondering where my twice weekly fallout inspiration had gone ;)

Now stop being a slaker and take some pictures!  ;D

Well I'd like to say I've been doing practical things, but yeah, the rest of my spare time's been spent playing Project Zomboid (a game in which I somehow have a cupboard stacked to the walls with guns, yet can't find a single cuddly toy raccoon). Ah well, I'll try and keep it to one or two updates a week for the moment anyway. Faking my death will rid me of all those pestering friends who keep eating into my playing with dolly time. =P

First up the second of the suburban homes is painted, along with a set of picket fences (more of which are pending). The paint job on this needs some work, as I had to have it in a playable state for a game I had. I'll go back and touch it up at some point.

I had a go at painting the general store as well. Hmn, I like this thing. I'm not entirely sure on the colour, but it'll do. Woo I can actually use my pre-war posters on something for once! :)

The bits from Ainsty Castings I ordered haven't arrived yet so I haven't made much progress on the larger shop. Well I have, but I don't really want to continue with it until I have the ventilation unit for it. Saying that I put together another building to bide the time. I etched a brick pattern into some foam instead of using ready made plasticard (as the only stuff I could find locally was £8 per A5 sheet). Meh, we'll see what happens. Tah zizi666 for the suggestion (uh, unless I screwed it up in which you're a terrible person zizi! ;)). Come to think of it I also wanted to place an order for Hasslefree's etched brass retro signs, but eugh, they just had to be out of stock. Um, but to offset my typical moaning a bit, at least that means by the time I order something from them again they'll probably be something new and interesting for me to pick up (...I'll find a way of adding the signs to these buildings later. Shouldn't be too hard. *tears terrain into bits unintentionally).

With this I went for something different from the usual flat piece of plasticard I use for roofs. Instead I had a go at using a tatty wooden one. I'm not entirely sure if it'll work, but it looks interesting enough. Do you think I should go for something tidier if I try it again? I have a hankering to make a travel office and a load of posters to go with one, so this'll probably turn out as one of those. Still a major WIP, as in the staircase isn't even attached right now... For scale this is mounted on an A4 sheet, so its larger the general store (hmn, perhaps too big, but whatever).

And, wasting more Tamiya brick sets, I plunked together some loose ruins. They're just there in case I want a larger building than the A4 I'm limiting myself too (anything larger and I can't fit this crap into a box for transit). They're still short of being done obviously. I'll probably add one some broken plaster to the interior walls so the brick is so jarring and add pipes and crap. Not sure about bits of furniture. I'll probably add some toilets to one of the pieces, but the rest will be bare for utility (...but then again I do like tarting up things, so we'll see what happens).

Uh, and I picked these up. For ...reasons. It was these and a pack of downed Vietnam era American pilots who I know I'll find some use for. :)

So more updates incoming, uh, based on how much I can actually bother myself to do. If my order from Ainsty Castsings turns up then I'll work on the shops more, failing that I'll find something else to do (...totally not playing computer games of course). Bugger, and at this moment I remember I forgot to put glass in the general store's windows. Heh, there that'll be what I post next time. ^^'
