Looking for instructions on building western building.
« on: November 25, 2013, 04:14:26 AM »
Hi all,

I am going to be attempting a few scratch builds over the next few weeks/months and I am hoping someone might know where I can find some instructions to build a 28mm cow town? I don't want to buy any buildings since my gaming budget is small and I prefer to spend it on miniatures.

Cheers,

Daniel

Hi there! Do you mean instructions about plans and shapes and detailing?

Or tutorials about the construction itself?

What kind of materials do you have in mind... Foam board, balsa, MDF. Paper.. That might help with some guidance.

The knuckleduster book cowtown creator may be of interest if you have spare funds

Sorry didn't think of such things. I will be making it out of foam board and using craft sticks for detail. I need measurements for the buildings more so then anything else, I am terrible at attempting this stuff without a guide, my very tiny world war 2 bunkers and my cyclopean modern buildings speak for themselves (now used  by my nephew with playmobile) . For my asian and middle eastern buildings I am using the wonderful guides at http://www.matakishi.com and I just want something similar for my Western Town.

Cheers,

Daniel

I suppose if I was going to recommend sets of plans then I would go to the Precision Scale website at http://www.precisionscaleco.com/
Click on the catalog button and go to page 2, the last three items there are for plans for western buildings.
#9785 is for Railroad structures which you probably don't need, but the next two (9786 and 9787) are for Old West style buildings. There is a third volume on the top of the next page 9788. Its not a huge investment of money but if you aren't in the US shipping time could take a while.

Irish, Ive started some scratch building of scenery, and found it pretty easy entry, with a steep learning curve for the perfecting of details.

Follow those links provided, (especially the one to Michi's OW thread) but my tip is find the door height, door width and ceiling height your happy with and keep that roughly the same. Ive noticed that in the real world there is a lot of variation from the colonial buildings, post war boom, and modern monstrosities. So there is some flexibility and thats ok ;)

I run 60mm ceiling height, and 35mm x 20mm doors if I recall correctly. (also factor in shrinkage - if you line your foam core holes with a card window frame/door frame that will make it a bit smaller)

Cheers
Matt

One of my friends made a whole western village like this:
http://euthanasor-wargamesetmodelisme.blogspot.fr/2011/03/la-droguerie-et-le-service-apres-vente.html
(other articles on same blog for more houses etc)

He made a lot of details but it's possible to make the same shape of house with less work if you don't want so many small details.

I think you could safely use Matakishi's building plans for dimensions and then just 'westernise' the exteriors?

You could always buy one laser-cut building you like, get a feel for the style and then, base your measurements off that one.. Just a thought I had. Hope it goes well for you.

A couple more places to check out -

http://www.mts.net/~gisby/owbuild.htm

Please note the Carsten Publication site linked in the above is not available anymore, but you may be able to pick up the "Modelling The Wild West" book on a reseller site. I used to have a copy and it was pretty good.

"Modeling the Wild West" is still on the Carstens site as in print and my local railroad store (Caboose Hobbies) had copies on the shelf over the weekend.

Thanks Heisler,

That's good to read.

It's a bit unfortunate that the drawings in that book are a bit "soot and snowpake" because it is a useful resource.
