For the most part I agree, on the other hand, 20% is pretty sweet as well.  Especially since most of us can make purchases from the comfort of our homes!

It's an American thing. Unfortunately, it's now in Canada too. Americans even start Thursday night, and go all night - it's not just Friday! It's rather insane, people go nuts and do amazingly stupid things to save money on crap they didn't need. There's even a Death Count: http://blackfridaydeathcount.com

I am staying home Friday as I have the day off, and will be painting.

Its a bit like the Man Shopping Christmas Rush or the New Year Sales here in the UK. 

The US do it for Thanks Giving.

I sort of intended the thread as a place where we can all see what the offers are for the next few days, but it seems a little history on Black Friday is in order

Pre-1980's: Black Friday was the September 24, 1869 crash precipitated by financiers Gould and  Fisk.

1980's -90's - It is announced that the 'Shopping Season' for X-Mas begins the day after Thanksgiving, which always falls on a Thursday.  This is mostly due to the fact that the Thursday holiday is really a 4-day weekend.

2000's - The momentum of the 'last 4 weeks before X-Mas' starts to become more institutionalized.  'Black Friday' is re-purposed to talk about the number of consumers in the stores with the glut and inconvenience.  This was not meant to be a 'positive'.

mid-2000's - Retailers begin to really take advantage of this consumer surge, especially after the financial crash in 2008, by offering DEEP discounts.  The WalMart $1.00 Waffle Maker comes to mind.

Today - Retailers are trying to push the boundaries by now extending the sales days back to the actual holiday Thanksgiving.

That's the skinny of the holiday.  But for us, we're very lucky since most of us make purchased through automated online systems. Therefore, if our favorite retailers choose to offer a sale, it's not like someone has to man the phones, etc.  Therefore, for us, we can avoid the ugliness of mass crowds and mobs and just enjoy some nice sales.  

So to go back to the original intent of this thread so that this does not turn into a discussion about cultural norms or consumerism and gets locked, please feel free to contribute any sales info running for the next few days so that we can all take advantage of them, and help support the vendors we all love!

I find it a bit annoying that every single online retailer that has my email address has started bombarding me with this Black Friday stuff without the slightest explanation as to what it means. And most baffling of all, most of them are UK-based. It seems like it is a thing they have decided to push on us and force into the culture with a crowbar, so we will spend more money. I guess they expect that if they just do it every year we will soon forget that we don't know what it is, where it came from, or why it is happening, and we'll just happily go along with it. I expect they are right. Halloween and "Trick or Treat" has gone from virtual non-existence to a major inconvenience in just a few short years, after all.



Edit: Oops. Sorry, failed to get that in before the moratorium on moaning about this cultural invasion came in (it wasn't there when I started typing, honest). You have my apologies, and by all means, let's get back to listing sales...
