A place to fight over (ECW)
« on: 03 December 2013, 08:52:34 PM »
Hello,

I have made a start on my collection of Renegade/Bicorne ECW, and am anxious to get a campaign underway.  I have been considering trying to come up with a fictional county in which to set my games.  Someplace where local rivalries and old feuds would be reignited by the war.  Not only might this be enjoyable, but could help compensate for my shallow understanding of English geography.
I have only got as far as a skirmish over the village of Wainscoting.  Has anyone used something like this before, or have any suggestions?  Any input would be much appreciated.
Thanks very much,
Chris

The 1644 rules did something similar and gave an example of a fictional county for a mini campaign.

Ah, Scruttockshire. Lovely spot for a fight lol

Unless you are determined to fight certain specific battles, I think this works well, in most eras and locations. You can use specific buildings/structures, adapted for size and ease of construction, or just features from them.

I look forward to seeing the results. Reminder - I really must dig my ECW armies out and have a bash!

Many, many years ago we did something similar; I'll never forget the siege of Ungainly Manor, and the battles of Gettingham Down and Dangly Bottom and the heroic artilleryman "man with bucket" who defended his gun against allcommers.

This sort of campaign has bags and bags of potential and the more players the merrier; treachery, deception and side coat turning at every opportunity.

Yeah, you can almost do a one player per unit thing with each player having military and personal objectives. Great fun!

Thanks for your responses.  I will have to try to get a copy of 1644.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks,

It's a nicely presented rulebook, lots of colour and fluff, and a nice, simple set of rules that I found worked well when I used them.

I, on the other hand, couldn't wait to be rid of 1644 - and that was before I finished reading them!  Okay, a bit harsh that, but true.  And I must also admit that, after painting up a nice little army for the period, I promptly sold it off.  Afraid it just wasn't right for me - too many pikes and hedges (and I love terrain).  But agree about the style of campaign/game and its utility across many periods.
