Back of Beyond RCW game at Enfilade
« on: June 02, 2008, 05:48:20 PM »
On Saturday of Enfilade 2008, Bruce Meyer (of Company B fame) ran an RCW game. It was a "come one, come all" affair originally designed for 8 though in the end it accommodated 19! Somewhere, some kind of laws were broken regarding weight allowances considering all the lead that was on the table! We used a slightly modified "Heroes of the Russian Revolution" (available free from Gauntlet International).

The scenario was that a train, carrying a very valuable treasure, had broken down. No coal, no ammo. On the flat bed was a statue of a man and woman holding a hammer and sickle and in it's base were purported to be the bones of the dead Czar and his family.

Reds, Whites and local partisans descended on the train. It really was a massive free for all. After about four turns the local partisans splintered into White and Red factions that only added to the maelstrom and confusion. By turn four or five, there had been so much bloodshed that parts of the table were nearly void of troops!

In the end, the Reds, nearly bled dry from the overwhelming White power remaining, had to retreat from the train they had temorarily captured. Of course, the Red Komissars will write this up as some sort of a victory. The Whites recaptured the statue and the bones of the sainted Romanov martyrs!

This was so much fun that we're planning another game next year. If someone can help me out, I've got LOTS of photos to post from this game.

Me too.  Lovely game.  What's the black and yellow flag in the foreground?

You've got me. I think they are Chris Bauermeister's figs. Looks like a Russian style uniform with a French adrian helmet (Brigade Games, I think). Only one of my units has a flag at this time - the Siberians with their green and white flag.

the guys with the french helm are the shock troopers, actually "Kornilovzy", a special unit of Genral Kornilov, actually they had a red-black banner not yellow black one.

That mass of beautiful figures and equipment was on a table only 8' x 8' (about 2.5 meters by 2.5 meters).  There was only a little cover, and hardly any of it was in the zones where the Reds set up with a little less artillery and much less armor.  There was no where to run and nowhere to hide.  So most of the Reds had been blasted off the table by the end of 5 turns.  A similar fate befell Bauermeister's White cavalry.  The fog lifted on turn 3 and the slaughter began.  It was really a shame to put so many expensive and beautifully painted figures on the table only to have to remove them so fast.

Hopefully next year a big RCW game will be more spread out, maybe on a 6' x 16' table (about 2 meters by 5 meters) so that there can be maneuver, and hopefully there will be woods, gullies, buildings, or otherwise more cover.  It would be nice to have those great figures stick around a little longer to prolong the spectacle.
Sailors have more fun!
