Cheap source for tires?
« on: December 14, 2013, 06:53:17 PM »
I was wondering if anyone knows a decent source to pick up a few cheap plastic or rubber tires, similar to the Matchbox cars of yesteryear line? I thought maybe there would be something through railroad supply (O-scale would be fine - anything between 1:43 and 1:55, really), but I actually haven't found any cheap ones going that route. Also a couple of die-cast ones on online shops, but I'm not really looking to spend real money here.

Was hoping maybe someone would have some broken or cast-off wheels that could be shipped cheaply on fleabay, but nothing there.

I suppose I could buy more matchbox yesteryear cars and just rip the wheels off, but that seems like kind of a waste! Might try the local model railroad shop and try my luck, but if anyone knows any alternative, that would be keen!

Seems like the manufacturer makes cars in 1:16, 1:32, and 1:87 scale. Given how cheap this pack is for the number of tires you get, I would guess that these are 1:87. not that 1:16 would have been any better really.  :-[

I've been keeping a watch on these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOY-Farming-Series-Silo-Cover-Tires-Canvas-KIDS-GLOBE-/370828557713?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item56571abd91

But I don't know their size for sure  :'(

Ebay never ceases to amaze me at the great finds that are about under our noses. Maybe there should be a board just for these sort of things.....

HOW-SO-EVER... it looks like predatorpt has the right idea with those search terms for toys. Can't find quite what I'm looking for, but these are closer (and are 1:48th! Well, that's what the listing says anyway):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-doz-15mm-BLACK-Treaded-Tyres-Tires-for-Dinky-Toys-/190998917251?pt=UK_ToysGames_DiecastVehicles_DiecastVehicles_JN&hash=item2c786c3083#ht_638wt_1172

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-dozen-17mm-dia-Army-Tyres-Tires-for-Dinky-Toys-/151182314048?pt=UK_ToysGames_DiecastVehicles_DiecastVehicles_JN&hash=item23332b0a40#ht_620wt_1172

Those are a bit modern for me being 50's-60's era tires, but they could pass for 30's-era tires for then-newer cars or trucks. If you wanted to split one of those lots, I could buy some off of you.

There's even this jumbled lot, but I'm not sure of the scale at all:

LEGO sells rubber tyres on a regular base and they have an extensive range and an online parts service
but You have to know which size
and they are not expensive

I bought this set a few months ago. From memory, the tyres are about 15mm or 20mm diameter. They're very close in size to the Ainsty Tyrewall tyres.

My plan is to make up some barricades with them for post apoc scenery
