Old (really, really old) Dragon magazines
« on: December 28, 2013, 02:52:36 AM »
I have a mad stack of old Dragons. Starting around the 20s, ending 138.

Are these something that could be sold? Or should I just recycle them?

Er....recycle them by passing them to me please.............

Seriously though they can be sold on ebay, the earlier issues can sometimes go quite high. I have pdfs of most of them but it is not the same as holding the actual magazine....how I rue the day I sold them way back for beer money  :-[

I know of at least 2 folks in my area who have fairly extensive collections of any/everything D&D related. One of them has the Pokemon 'gotta catch 'em all' mentality, so I think it'd probably be worth your time to put 'em up on ebay.

I have all the Strategic Reviews that preceded the Dragon magazines which I hope to sell off someday.

Not best collector quality (working issues back in the day) but still relatively intact.

Good memories...

If you don't want to keep them yourself, it'll definitely be worth your while putting them on eBay.  Pre 2nd Ed issues are generally the most popular, so you should have no trouble shifting them.

how I rue the day I sold them way back for beer money  :-[

I did the same with a lot of stuff (rulesets, minis, magazines) when I had my "late teenager crisis" (when I was 25-27  lol)

The worst thing is how it's hard and costly now to find again things I sold for almost nothing  :? Thinking especially of a complete 1st edition of necromunda in complete boxset with a metal goliath gang, or this complete in box warzone imperial trencher squad...Or this complete, never used battlefleet gothic box  ::)

I will not say for how much I sold them, but "beer money" is actually a good picture  lol Hopefully I kept a few gems (most of my warzone collection, my ral partha heroes, etc...).

Oups I went a bit off topic  ;D To conclude, I'd say think twice before selling anything.

Gawd it just kills me when a gamer "recycles" materials. :-(

Go to Ebay Search, advanced, look for completed or sold (better) auctions and here is an example.

Sell them.

Some go for less of course.

Thanks Glenn! Interesting that.

Well, I managed to compromise; I sold the earliest 22 that have the least attachment to (they are before my gaming time, really) at a bargain price of $1 an issue. Satisfies both parties - I made some room, the other person gets some vintage mags, and I have a couple of bucks too. The money isn't important in clearing out! I really didn't want to just dump them in a recycle bin. Grimmnar is right: somewhere, a gamer will want what I am string rid of, right?
Sometimes, shipping is awful though. I have recycled some stuff recently that I couldn't even give away because shipping is atrocious.

So I now have issues 51 to around 132ish, I think a few gaps at the beginning, continuous from 58? I'll have to check.

The rest I think I will keep. Nostalgia and all that. :)

After LAF, Ebay, local gamers board, et. al., and can't sell (often because of outlandish [IMO] shipping,) and not willing to keep stuff never used then the options are GoodWill or trash can/recycling.  Alternatives?

Glenn

Yup, when it can't even be given away, better to pulped for recycling than buried in a landfill.

Sometimes you try - in one case to give a group items for postage costs but they bulk at postage costs (understandable) and want you to drive around 500 +/- miles (246.7 one way) to drop things off.  Even if it is for High School kids to learn war gaming my car gets 15 - 16 mpg and that plus my time (call it 7 hours round trip) isn't worth it.  If I had had the time and interest to attend the event that would have been no problem.

Sorry, whine didn't come with cheese and bread... Apologies.   :o

Maybe people just don't want the stuff is a possibility too...   lol

Gracias,

Glenn

That is nuts! I think sometimes when a price is on an item, it's better - people don't appreciate free, like a price establishes value.
