Whale for 28mm Pirates
« on: December 31, 2013, 06:46:11 PM »
Pictured here are a before and after of a Toys R Us plastic whale I picked up at the swap meet for $3.  In the after pictures, I have cut the whale to show its head rising from the sea and its tale slipping beneath the waves… thus two whales for the swap meet price of one.  Once the whale was cut, I repainted it and added the water bases that are made of Milliput.  The rowboat is another broken toy purchased at the swap meet for 50 cents and modified for use with my Old Glory pirate rowers.  The pirates were included to provide an idea of the size of the whale.

Really well done. Is this eye candy only or are you planning a "whaling" game?

Very nice. That whale would go well with the Eureka Miniatures set. Ideas, ideas.

Looks like the two "after" pics are right-side-up again.  That's good.  Furt, I wish I could tell you I had a plan.  I didn't.  Just the urge to make a whale that would work with my pirate collection and Toys R Us made a good one and the swap meet price was great.  Thanks all for the kind words.  Richard

I got Black Flag for the Xbox for Chrissie and have experienced whaling "first hand". A both terrifying and exhilarating experience for me, that would be cool to transfer into miniature gaming.  :)

The Eureka whaling boat would go well with this beast.

Furt, I'm a big fan of Eureka, and those whalers certainly crossed my mind and were looked at by me several times, but at some point even someone as crazy as I am has to show a little control.  I have far more on my plate (my lead mountain) than I will ever complete as it is.  The problem with me is the three dollar whale would lead to sixty dollars in whalers would lead to a whaling ship, would lead to a whaling port….  I've been down this road too many times before.  I'll have to leave this great idea to someone else.  Richard

:-* Great job on the whale. Now I need to hunt one of those down for myself, if you'll pardon the pun.

I too have spent (lost) many many hours (read days/weeks) on Black Flag. Hunting for the white whale could make a nice scenario for my pirate crew.

gnomehome, your whale is wonderful.  In fact about six months ago I put your whale pic on my desktop for future reference and I was very happy when I realized that my swap meet whale and your picture were the same toy.  Unfortunately, while I still had the pic I had forgotten where I got it.  Anyway, thanks for the inspiration.  Richard
