25MM/28MM Pirates
« on: June 28, 2012, 03:41:29 AM »
For the last 30 years my hobby focus has been on 15mm military miniatures and my paint of choice has been oil based.  But seven years ago I began putting together a collection of 25mm/28mm figures for a pirate collection.  In October 2011 I started painting that collection.  I finished painting my pirate collection on June 12, 2012.  It was my first experience with 25mm/28mm figures and my first experience painting with water-based paints.  I organized that collection in a gallery depicting a pirate attack on the fictional Caribbean port of San Cristobal on the fictional Caribbean island of Lagrimas de Dios.  The first two thirds of the gallery is a view of the town before the attack.  The last third shows the pirate attack.  Below are a few samples.  I hope you’ll take the time to check out the entire gallery at www.warin15mm.com/Pirates.html

Beautiful - a piratical triumphant!

Well done for sticking to a period and getting so much done.

From a detailed read of his blog today, it sounds like the 3rd Disney POTC Black Pearl. Remote control for the rocking motion can be stripped out and brings it down to almost an acceptable waterline. Got one myself for about $40 Oz when the local toy store had a sale. Not the same bargain he got from garage sales or similar but still a good deal.

Very nice!!!

Thanks for the kind comments.  I'm obviously very glad you like the pirate collection.  Poiter50 is correct in saying that the Black Pearl that Disney released with the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie is the radio controlled ship with the rocker bottom.  In many ways it is the most out-of-the box perfect Disney ship in terms of 25MM/28MM use.  It is the one I named Hispaniola.  The really huge ship was released by Disney with the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean.  It is the only one that isn't a radio controlled toy.  It released as Blackbeard's ship Queen Anne's Revenge.  It is the one I named Seraphim.  As of a couple months ago, it was still being sold at Toys R Us.  It was a lot of work, but I really love that ship.  The other two Disney-released ships came out with either the first or second Pirates of the Caribbean movie (not sure because I never saw the box they came in) and it was also radio controlled, but not as perfect out-of-the-box for 25MM/28MM use as my Hispaniola, but they are still great ships.  They just needed a lot more work.  I named them Calliope and Walrus.  Again, thank you for the kind words.  It was a lot of fun putting this collection together.  Richard

Those are a lot of finely painted miniatures and a great showcase as well, it would fit well in a museum  :)

If you plan to take those figures of the diorama sometime in the future for cleaning or anything give me a holler cause I would want some of these for my Standee collection :)

gamer, thank you for the very generous words.  I was just coming on to say that if people are interested they can see the condition I got the ships in when I bought them at the swap meet at Captain Bloods List of 28mm Scale Pirate Ship.  I posted pics of them there awhile back.  One of them shows my early efforts to repair the missing masts (done with white Evergreen plastic).  They can be seen at leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=34316.msg403004#43004

Cherno, thank you for your very welcome and kind remarks.  I've seen pics from your Standee collection and they are impressive.  To be honest, I'm not the photographer in this family.  Somehow I can see to paint but can't quite focus the camera.  I make appointments with my daughter for my photo work, but I'll keep your offer in mind.  Richard

Incredible work!
The miniature detail, the diorama figure placement, the photography.
Props for the drunk that is sitting on the floor with a chair tipped over behind him. I've drank with that guy at a Renaissance Fair before. Looking through the characters you almost can see each one's story in your mind.
