Steam Crab walker WIP - Done
« on: June 06, 2008, 12:40:13 PM »
Here's a couple of pics of something I have been building over the past couple of days - inspired by Pappa Midnight and Geudens' stirling work.

It's a large Steam Crab Strider, made from bits of Bionicle (for the leg joints, so the model can be posed).  A couple of bottle caps, fimo 'knees', a plastic wine 'cork', lots of dremeled golf tees and a tiddlywink (so far).

I still need to add some rivets, pipes, a smoke stack and stuff.  I'm not entirely sure what weapons to equip it with though.

Any feedback?

Cheers

Looking good. :) Arm it with a machine gun, perhaps a Gatling?

I say ether 2 canons in the body or two gatling guns mounted in the front like incissers!  :D

Wonderful display of scratch-building skills!!!

I've been looking at some bionicle stuff for parts, I may have to have another look next time I'm out.

Weapons-wise: Twin Gatlings in the turret or electrified pincers.

I'm looking forward to seeing the finished model.

Regards

Great stuff!

Just goes to show what a sharp mind and a keen eye for useful materials can come up with.

Oh, yes, I'd go with the Gatling idea!

Like the rest, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished beastie  :)

Surely that should be twin Gatlings in the turret AND electrified pincers!

Cheers guys - I've added quite a bit of detail now, and made it so the turret and belly guns can be swapped and/or removed (to show damage?) by cunning use of magnets and metal plates (From an old magnetic game).  I just couldn't decide!

I'll update in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the comments!  :)

What are the legs on the little one from ?

That could make a great walking bomb.

Finally finished modelling the crab today - been nice and sunny, so I did it outside :)

This is the crab armed with claws -

Here with gattling guns, showing the magnet attachments for the claws, they stick to the magnetic belly.  Could easily have one of each, or none, depending on preference.

The turret comes off to show damage, I plan to make some variants so I can swap them when the need arises, artillery guns, etc (the current one is a generic energy weapon thingy).

A couple of rear views, slightly asymmetric, just cos ;)

Now to undercoat the beast!

PS: the legs of the little walker are made from those curly curtain hooks, cut up and rearranged.  ;)

Very nice so far. I lile the interchangeable weapons.

As you said , its a nice day and I can't think of a better way to spend a nice summer afternoon in the garden than to make steam ttech projects. in fact thats just what I've been doing too!

Excellent work, it's looking great! My day was spent viewing houses. Much rather have built stuff.

Looks great as is but should you want to take it that extra step and give it a "realistic"  ;) look, then I'd suggest adding some pistons to the legs. They're easy to do, just use two thicknesses of rod.
So many projects..... so little time.......
