Ebor miniatures WSS Spanish Dragoons
« on: January 05, 2014, 05:01:55 PM »
I've just added the Spanish Dragoons to the site at eborminiatures.com as usual the figures are by Paul Hicks and Paul has done his usual top notch job.
There is also a command blister of officer, standard bearer and Drummer, the figures are on trotting horses from ebob.
A 3 figure blister pack is £7.80p a 12 figure regiment is £29 or they can be purchased as part of the army builder horse deal of 4 regiments for £100 making them £25 a regiment.
Coming soon will be five mounted General officers, French horse with pistols and charging with swords plus the Garde da Corp pictures of first casts below painted by yours truly to my wargames standard.

Spanish Dragoons

Cheers Nick

Lovely stuff as always Nick.

I know you are knee deep in WSS and a GNW but have your thoughts ever turned to the WAS and The War of Jenkins Ear? I'd love some Spanish and British for that time frame and minis are thin on the ground. To the best of my knowledge nobody produces 28mm Spaniards for the WAS, SYW etc save for whoever now opens the dire ex London War Room figures.

I must admit it makes a change to see some actual Spanish troops for the War of The Spanish Succession  ;)

Javier Gomez "El Mercenario"? I was almost sure about that; he is a great painter, and a great person.
And I know your Spanish figures too well!!! I expect to buy my first battalion next month. Are you going to have some pikemen?

These are wonderful figures, and I am also awaiting your GNW...

Cheers!

I reply myself...

Ordered a full battalion of Spanish troops! Now, the really difficult task in this country, to find information about their uniforms...

Hi Juan

Sapherson's old booklet on WSS Spanish is a starting point : it's by no means comprehensive but it does the job if you don't expect more than a summary introduction - and it's dirt cheap to boot :

http://www.caliverbooks.com/bookview.php?f7836c5d3fe14e33b2f4ab714bdce174&id=3954&subcatcode=D&subcatno=27

The Alfonso Canovas blog also features a fair amount of material on the subject, but you really need to sift through a lot of pages to get to the interesting stuff, and not all of it is necessarily accurate - Canovas just piles up things he found on the net, he doesn't analyse and discuss them.

You're welcome, Juan.

I meant to post the following earlier but real life got in the way.

If you wish to model the pre-1706/1707 army - i.e before the white or grey/white coats became more or less universal - the Tercio website offers a reasonably comprehensive coverage of the coloured coats worn by the tercios espanoles during the 1690's and early 1700's. These were supposedly replaced by the new French-style whitish coats by 1706/1707 but some artists show a mix of old and new uniforms at the battle of Almansa in April 1707. For instance, the following plate by Emilio Marin depicts a wounded officer from the Guadalajara regiment in his old-style yellow coat faced blue along with a musketeer from regiment Solis (ex Brabante) in red lined blue, while the Murcia musketeer on the right wears the new white coat with blue facings. The grenadier drummer on the left belongs to the Castillo regiment and still wears the purple coat of the Morados Viejos Sevilla tercio.

I don't know what sources Marin used, so can't tell whether this mix of old and new styles is accurate or not for 1707. In any case, here's the link to the Tercio website, and you'll note that it occasionally disagrees with Sapherson on some of the old Tercios uniforms :

http://tercio1617.fr.nf/

Another interesting resource - and in Spanish to boot - is the Researching & Dragona website. The magazine is now long defunct but some articles - though unfortunately not all of them - have been scanned and are now available for free as pdf's :

http://www.tercios.org/R_D/R_D_cereceda.html

Check the table below for a list of what's available :

http://www.tercios.org/R_D/R_D_indices.html

There's a particularly useful piece here on the various cavalry regiments :

http://www.tercios.org/files/Regimientos_de_Caballeria_R_D_N_6_pdf_1_.pdf

And the Desperta Ferro blog also features a good series of posts on Spanish flags of the period :

http://desperta-ferro-ed.blogspot.fr/2011_09_01_archive.html

Hope this helps a bit

Thank you very much, Arthur. Very useful links and illustration. There were many old uniforms in Almansa, so it can be a very colorful army!

Thank you a lot!

The Guys at the like a stone wall wargames group are recreating the battle of Almanza for triples on a twenty foot table using my figures so should be quite a spectacle, I am playing so will get some pictures, also one of the group, John Hutchinson will be doing the flags for all the regiments.
John has done the GNW flags for me so they will look brilliant, the guys really put on a great display.

cheers Nick
