On Monday night at 9pm on Channel 4 there's a documentary by actor Rupert Everett about my personal favourite Victorian nutbag, Sir Richard Francis Burton. It's part of the 'Victorian Passions' season so the focus is on his exotic sexual adventures rather than boring old stuff like bickering with John Hanning Speke and discovering lakes. As such it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I thought I'd tell the UK LAFers in case anyone was interested who may have missed the adverts for it.

Everett gets the traditional Indian equivalent of a lap dance.  :)

Pity the poor girl is wasting her time given that Everett's openly gay.

Let's have a remake of "Khartoum" that focuses on "Chinese" Gordon's well-documented interest in young boys.

On second thought: let's not.  We can just watch the old one and snicker at Charlton Heston.

Ooh! I missed seeing that in the Radio Times!

I'm a bit of a Rupert Everett fan & I'm also fascinated by Burton's bizarre antics, as well as his far less dubious exploring antics.

I'm sure someone could do a DVD R for the Prof. If no-one else volunteers, I'd be happy to have a go [although I will be at work that night, so might forget to record it myself  :( ]

Well, I'm sure he can appreciate it on some level, for its artistic merits or whatever. Much as I can enjoy a good Bollywood tune without having the first clue as to what they're singing about. Um ... or something like that.

I sat and watched it  last night. Quite enjoyable altough I didn't care for the self harming, eye gouging, impalement scenes much :o

Whatever rocks your boat, mate. Far too many people involved in Bollywood tunes for my taste.

Haven't seen it yet, I was watching the Dutch give Italy a hammering.

I hopefully recorded it on the Hard Drive of this new-fangled no-tape VCR thingy I've got. If that has worked then in theory I should be able to put it on a DVD for the Prof or anyone else who wants to see it.

For Hammers (only two people singing in this one, and they're both pretty foxy  :))...

Think it told you more about the young man fronting the documentary than about Richard Burton , but enjoyable anyway ! . Nice to the Victorians getting airtime on TV . :)

So, as Plynkes seems to like it :

This song is used as score for "Ghost World", nice little movies and great comics by the way.

Ha! I love it.

The music is more Swinging London or Groovy California than typical Bollywood, though. It's as if terrorists hijacked the original version of "Casino Royale" and crashed it straight into Bombay. Keep expecting a Hindi Austin Powers to make an entrance.

I finally got round to watching this at the weekend. Really enjoyable, Everett makes a very engaging host for the doc.

Mosstrooper is right, Burton seems to be almost an afterthought to make the documentary a proper piece of research. Its almost as if Everett pitched it as "a film about foreign weirdos and what they like to stuff up their back passages" and was told to make it a bit more educational in order to get the funding.

Very interesting though, even so.
