Author Topic: Skirmish gaming 30 Years War.... which rules are the best set for the period?  (Read 3201 times)

Having a smallish collection (of around 100) of mostly unpainted 28mm 17th Century period miniatures which were intended to be used for a ECW project i never got off the ground a few years back and kept in store since. Have now decided to paint them.

Have recently been reading a fair bit about the 30 Years War and thinking about developing a couple of skirmish forces for the period but wondering what commercial or online rules work well for skirmish gaming this period. The idea of Pike and musket blocks does not really get me going but skirmish gaming with small forces with a few personality types thrown in does.

Any suggestions would be great :)

Gloire?
It's nothing, sir. Just a burn from a ray gun.

I'd almost be tempted to say Mordheim!

Not seen it yet but Donnybrook from the LoA might suit. After all the pike and matchlock lasted thru to 1700 (ish) at least.

"Escalade" is a very nice set for the period.

Thank you all for the advice and will try some of the systems :) I do like what i have read about Donnybrook but will wait to see how it plays before i give it a go :)

Have managed to download the Mordheim rules and spent some time this afternoon looking them over and really like them and will give them a go with a few adaptions.....might eventually add an angry mob and maybe a witch hunter or two to my forces to give them a bit of flavour :)....dont think i will be able to squeeze in any followers of Nurgle or any Marsh Trolls though lol
