Gallery: Ethereal Court of the King of the Barrows.

In the heart of ancient hills, where silence thickens like blood and the wind carries the wails of tongues long forgotten, slumbers an ancient evil. The Court of the Barrow King was never truly brought into being—because it never truly died. For thousands of years, it has drifted on the border of worlds, between sleep and death, between memory and oblivion. When protective wards weaken, when sacrifices no longer burn on stone altars, when mortal feet dare trespass upon sacred barrows—ghosts, shadows, and wraiths slither up from the depths, bringing ruin to all who disturb their slumber. Yet before a shadow falls upon a soul, it falls first upon its echo—and it is the echo that screams first. The Ethereal Court knows no mercy, no rest. At its head stands the Barrow King—a ruler whose name neither the living nor the dead dare whisper. He alone survived the first war between men and gods, bound in accursed crypts where his body crumbled to dust, yet his spirit endured, ravenous for dominion over a world that had forgotten him. It is he who stirs the souls of ancient warriors, summoning them from the abyss of shadow. It is his will that binds scattered memories of battle and death into phantom legions, marching in silence through groves, graveyards, and mist-covered moors.

Warriors buried centuries ago in moss-covered mounds rose again during the Storm of Chaos. Not to fight for mankind—not out of loyalty to mortals—but because hatred outlasts death. In their hollow gaze, all life was guilty. They made no distinction between soldier, berserker, or daemon. All that breathed deserved the chill of the grave. Their charges tore across the hills of Ostland, cutting down both Slaves to Darkness and the sons of Sigmar. For wraiths, there are no sides—only vengeance. When they march to war, their tread echoes not with sound but with a deathly silence that strangles breath before the clash. They sing no songs—their hymn is the howl of the damned, drifting over misty barrows like the cry of a dying world.

Their seat lies within barrows—primeval tombs raised long before the birth of the Empire. Built by tribes who venerated their dead chieftains, these mounds are now forgotten, moss-covered, and cursed. Where mortals see abandoned hills, a subterranean city sleeps beneath—a labyrinth of crypts, chambers, and ritual halls, filled with urns, murals, and enchanted sentinels. Their entrances are guarded by runes and talismans, which shatter when the King calls. It is said that every soul slain by a warrior of the Court is forever trapped within the barrow from which its killer rose. These mounds hold bronze armor, winged helms, ceremonial blades and spears—and bodies that never decay. Shamans who once sought to mimic the rites of the Tomb Kings of Nehekhara fell into forbidden necromancy, handing the Barrow King the keys to dark sorcery. Thanks to them, his undead host has endured for millennia. And when the Storm of Chaos came, they marched to war again. Ethereal warriors feel no pain, know no fear, and never retreat—for they have lost all that made them living.

Within the gloom of these catacombs, the eternal court endures. Shamans from forgotten ages, spirits of children buried alive, assassins with cursed blades bound to their souls. Their existence is suffering—timeless, unfulfilled, eternally hungry. The Barrow King knows no compassion. He is the emperor of death, tyrant of the beyond, lord of what should not be. Delving into forbidden tomes, necromancers seek to summon his servants—and almost always pay with life or soul. The corpses of those slain by them are found with skin frozen to the bone and faces locked in eternal terror. Their presence taints the land—plants wither, animals flee, and children are born with eyes as lifeless as ash. The Court of the Barrow King is no army—it is a curse. Its warriors need no steel, for their touch brings the chill of the tomb. Among them drift hollow-eyed wraiths, banshees wailing dirges of death, and specters bound by dark energy. Their coming heralds storms, overwhelming darkness, and the scent of damp earth from the grave. To face their somber march is to feel one’s soul torn free before the first blow. Many necromancers have tried to master the Barrow King—none have returned, and sometimes, his scream is heard from within the oldest mounds.

Sometimes, on cold nights, a greenish glow lingers above the barrows. Peasants whisper that these are the spirits patrolling the borders of a forgotten kingdom. Some say that the dead are not tied to burial grounds, but to memory—and that every lonely tower, every abandoned chapel, every forest hides a tomb of the Barrow King. Truly, wherever his gaze fell in life, he may return in death. Old maps are marked with cursed symbols, forbidden ruins are avoided even by priests of Morr, and underground echoes carry whispers in a tongue never spoken by mortals. In the hearts of those who survived an encounter with an ethereal warrior, there is no room for prayer—only fear. When the Barrow King calls to arms, he does not ask—he commands. Even in death, his subjects obey. When travelers cross the borders of his dominion, the guardian spirits rise to claim blood for broken silence. A frigid gust precedes their arrival. Then comes silence. And death. Those who survive are never the same again. Where they march, time cracks, and their footsteps burn not into the soil—but into memory.

The Ethereal Court of the Barrow King can be imprisoned—but not destroyed. For he does not live to exist—he exists to remind. That death is not the end. That ancient sins never stay buried. And that graves will not remain sealed forever. Some say the Ethereal Court is not an army of the dead, but the memory of an entire dead world, returning to pass judgment. When they approach, the world loses its color—everything turns pale, silent, and lifeless, even before the first blow is struck.

I already showcased the Ethereal Court of the Barrow King HERE during the 122nd edition of the Miniatures Blogging Carnival.

Since then, new warband descriptions have been added to the rulebook, so it would be a shame not to take the opportunity to share the photos once again. At the bottom of the post, you’ll also find a few new phone snapshots.

There aren’t many models in this warband, but they’re quite large, and the painting process mostly involved oil-based paints from MIG and AK, as well as effects and technicals from GW.

Painting the Ethereal Court of the Barrow King took me a few evenings, and you can see the results in the photos below.

Incidentally, this might be the first Warheim FS warband written specifically for a particular set of models. Usually, it's the other way around – models are chosen to match existing warband rules. But I liked GW’s ethereal creatures so much that I decided to bring this warband into the game.

Looking good, that GW ghost range is seriously underated. There's a fantastic sense of movement in the sculpts.

Gallery: Ethereal Court of the King of the Barrows. Heroes - King of the Barrows.

The Barrow King is not merely a commander — he is the embodiment of the entire warband.
He is the spirit of an ancient monarch whose name has long been lost in the mists of time, yet whose will still commands shadows and wraiths. Trapped between the realm of the living and the dominion of death, he needs no throne nor crown — his majesty is forged in funereal silence and the relentless march of the undead. Where other heroes seek glory or gold, the Barrow King demands only one thing: the return of his kingdom, stone by stone, soul by soul. His presence is a shadow of the past cast across the present, leaving no room for a future.

Centuries ago, his lands stretched across the hills and forests of what is now the Fiefdom of Sigmar, but time, war, and faith consumed all he had built. Betrayed by mortals, buried in a ceremonial rite and forgotten, he has returned to reclaim what was stolen. His soul is bound to the physical world by ancient incantations and necromantic magic. In the face of the Storm of Chaos, his power stirred anew — not to choose sides, but to destroy all who dare claim dominion over his tombs. To the Barrow King, every living creature is an intruder, arrogantly treading upon the sacred ruins of his rule.

Alongside other barrow kings, he was embalmed and entombed in crypts, but his spirit never left. Like the rulers of ancient Nehekhara, his burial was both an act of power and a curse. Today, he takes the form of a towering, spectral warrior — a skeleton with eyes like scorched tombs, wielding sword and shield. His presence instills dread even in the bravest hearts, for each of his steps is a reminder that death is not an end, but the beginning of vengeance. When he marches to war, there is no battle cry — only the rising tension, as if the earth itself holds its breath.

The Barrow King does not command with his voice, but with the force of his will. He is an ethereal being, consumed by a hunger beyond mortal comprehension. No steel can wound him, no fatigue weaken his spirit. In the darkness of the barrows, his power calls forth wights and specters, and his army needs no armor to sow fear. Every command he gives is a sentence passed. Even those who dare destroy him will not escape his wrath — the curse woven into his fury reaches any who would raise a blade against the monarch. Even those who scoff at ghosts fall silent in his presence, unsure if they feel a chill in the air or the touch of death.

Barrow Kings like him have not forgotten. Their memory is sharper than any blade and deeper than any grave. They recall ancient laws, forgotten rites, and names no mortal speaks. They use titles that have lost their meaning, but not their power. Their vengeance is not rage — it is cold determination, forged over centuries. The Barrow King does not lead a battle — he leads an execution, the collapse of a world that dared to forget him. In his silence echo oaths never broken — only delayed.

Today I have photos of a heroes serving in the ranks of the Ethereal Court of the Barrow King, a warband I assembled using models from GW and painted with oil-based products from MIG and AK, along with effects and technical paints from GW.

For the role of the King of the barrows, I used the miniatures from the Kurdoss Valentian the craven king set from GW.

You can find more information about the Ethereal Court of the Barrow King in the Warheim FS rulebook.
