Painting a red granite ancient Egyptian statue

I am working on Egyptian scenery for In Her Majesty's Name. The ancient Egyptians used  many materials for statuary and obelisks, among them Aswan red granite, shown below:





Here is an unfinished obelisk still in the Aswan quarry:



I am gaming in 25mm/28mm. I have numerous statuettes ranging from 3" to 6" plus a pair of 8" obelisks. I would especially like to do the obelisks in red granite. I have located a suitable spray paint [Liquitex Professional Spray Paint Raw Sienna 5] for the base color for the red granite. My question is:

How do I get that black stippling effect? Craft paints that recreate stone effects won't work: they have a very coarse finish, way out of scale for my purposes. Besides, most statues were polished and had a smooth glossy surface.

After the base coat, should I do my shading before or after stippling?

My first thought is to lightly spray black paint from a distance over the base-coated statue/obelisk, but I have no experience with this, and little time to experiment. Thus I would greatly appreciate your advice on the matter.

Years ago we used a silk screen held between an airbrush and the subject to get a stipple effect in a larger scale - might be worth experimenting with.
