Medieval Donnybrook AAR #1

As you might have seen in a erlier post I have tryed to use the Donnybrook rules for my medieval project with multi based minis, it all worked realy fine and you can see the first AAR at my blog

The AAR is amazing, I love it.

Just a question about Donnybook: right now I´m reading the Sharp Practice rulebook to play medieval games in conjunction with Silver Whistle War of the Roses rules.

Do you think that Donnybook with the medieval source book that the Claymore guys are planing or with the modifications you are playing with will be more suitable for that period (WotR and Renascence Italy) than Medieval Sharp Practice ?

I know I can play both but a little advice and your opinion will be welcome.

It of course all depends of the kind of game you want. I havent tried Sharps Practise yet, but had my fair share of games using the TFL Dux Britanniarum rules for my medieval setting and they are quite alike Sharps Practise I reccon.

after just a few games of Donnybrook I feel that they are easy to learn, quite "generic" and very fast paced. Sharps Practise/Dux Britanniarum are a bit more complex, but might give a better feel for the period and more command and control, but they also take longer to play...

At the moment I can´t say that I will just be using one rule system I have at least three sets I for now like for my period, Hail Caesar, Dux Britanniarum/Sharps Practise and Donnybrook...the quest to find the perfect wargaming rules continue...

Thank you Michael for your answer, it was so useful to get the differences between each one of the systems and the different approaches to the game itself.

If you don´t mind just another question that I always wanted to do: what is your painting technique with those miniatures to get so much contrast? I saw an Army Painter ink bottle in one of your WIP shoots but I don´t know if was used with them.

Painting technique... or lack of it;)

I use to call it Impressionism painting... it´s realy the way I use to paint 15mm minis some years ago that I keept when I re-started to paint 28mm, mainly because its quite fast and the main aim of my painting are that it should look good on the gamin table and not realy in the pictures on my blog/forums as they tend to get a bit to close-up...

In short:

Black or brown primer
Some fast block painting in the basic colors
Wash with Army Painter ink (not the dip, smells to much)
One high light most often with a high contrast colour to the basic ones.

I will try the Impressionism way with my saxons warriors. I think the dramatic effect that creates in the whole band will suit them very well.
