If you're using washers to base your minis, you can have magnetized storage without putting a magnet under each individual mini :

It's some magnetized sheet, you can cut it with scissors or cutter. It's barely the same thing than fridge magnets.

Personaly, I'm using 20mm steel washers for 20mm minis, and 24mm to 30mm for 28mm figures.

That's exactly what I'm doing  ;)

... as I don't glue magnets to my minis anymore - instead of storing them in stuff that magnets stick to, I put adhesive magnetic sheets in boxes and store them there, thus I need metal bases that are attracted to magnets.

I've been using washers without magnets for years (this new-fangled neodymium stuff wasn't easily available 10-15 years back).

I've tried the magnetic sheeting, but I've found the magnetic sheeting I could get wasn't quite strong enough. You'd hit a bump with the car, a single mini will work loose and start bouncing against the others creating a chain reaction... at least with metal minis. Plastic is obviously easier.

Besides, they will still stick to magnetic sheeting. Apparently the sheet stuff isn't very strongly polarized.
The way I see it, I don't lose anything by adding the magnet.

I don't know if you're situated in Europe, but the sheets I get from here: http://www.cchobby.dk/magnetplade-1-stk.aspx
easily holds even large metal models on washers. No tumbling.

I'm not quite sure what the benefit would be, but I might give this a try anyway.

I thought you guys were already on with the euro...

Nope, like the Brits, we're holding on to our currency. I shouldn't make this remark, but we're also the people with an initial referendum 'no' to the union, and four 'exeptions' in the Maastricht.

The benefit would be saving the expense for super magnets. If you want your models to stick to magnetic paint on terrain, don't bother.

I get mine from DealExtreme. They're about 8 cents a piece so the expense is neglible. They're also good for turrets etc.

I have planned to do some magnetic terrain, though.

Unfortunately diecast toy cars are not magnetic, otherwise I would already have done a Matrix -style highway battle...

OK, I got mine from www.supermagnete.de - they are a bit more expensive (I think - I cannot juggle these rates in the head).

I have been using the magnetic strip since the late 70s. A lot thicker but stonger than the sheeting. As for washers: the 1/4" washer used to be 3/4" out side diameter, but sometime in the late 80s or early 90s the started getting thinner & smaller in diameter. The same with other sizes. Now you have to take a gage to the hardware store to find the size you need. The washers with the small hole in a large washer here are called fender washers.

If you haven't found any yet, then Bauhaus is the place to go in Denmark.

They have their own brand which is really cheap! and comes in all the wanted sizes 15mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm and so on... Their holes are small too, so will easily be covered by integral base or covered by a small amount of tape (malertape).

Yeah, I'd go with what Jonas says.

Any hardware store in Sweden has 25mm washers aplenty at about 5 cents a pop in bulk packs of 200.

Great, thanks! Got one in Odense.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind, should Bauhaus ever fail me!

I think some of the sizes of washers come with different size holes, but I only experienced it in one of the larger sizes I bought and it was still small enough to be used easy with miniatures.

Also make sure to look for the Bauhaus brand, since their more known brands (I guess, since I don't know anything about fashion in washers) are very expensive and probably more easy to spot :P The first time I went to get some Bauhaus washers I could not find them, later I discovered that they were hidden on some anonymous shelves.

Visited Bauhaus yesterday and got me 2x100 20mm and 1x100 25mm at DKK 30 per 100.

Fantastic tip, Jonas!  :)
