[KICKSTARTER] DreadBall Exteme
« on: 01 March 2014, 12:40:10 PM »
Couldn't find any other thread on this, hope I'm not making a double-post...

I just decided, after weighing pros and cons (there's a pun in there, right?) backing on Rampage level, to get a much stuff as possible within the appr. cost of a standard boxed game. I really like playing DreadBall, and want this version added to my collection. It may be my only larger purchase this year.

If someone out there should have  missed it by some chance, I include the link here:

I like that they are moving the Asterians away from space elves and towards blue not-humans with Dreadball Extreme. I do not like the cheesecake though. I wonder why female bodies so often seem to repel clothes in gaming...

Otherwise the miniatures look good, I am more and more warming to Mantics style, which also gets more and more coherent. I just got a copy of Dreadball and I really like it so far. Hopefully Extreme is just as good.

I backed the original DreadBall KS, too, and although I really dislike the material the minis are made from, I think the game is in itself very good.

I just have to settle for prepping one player at a time, from time to time, or it will drive me nuts.  lol

Crucial to note here is that the Dread Xtreme range IS NOT MADE FROM RESTIC.  It is made from a very differnt type of plastic, the same type used for the playing pieces in the Loka game that they released last year.

I dont play Loka, but I was given a Loka playing piece as a sample.  From the limited amopunt of experimentation that I have done with it, its not the same ragged, burr filled experience to clean up.  Its much better.

DreadBall is a great game.  I have backed this KS too without hesitation.

I was referring to the player minis I've already got (for the reasons stated, I've not managed to start painting a team, yet  ::)  ), as I thought I'd read somewhere that they would use a different material this time 'round.

After they annouunced today that they'll be unlocking a new season 5 team each day, the plot starts to thicken...

I realised that, but I just figured that pointing out that the material is different early on in this thread was a good idea, seeing as most discussions about Mantics output tends to turn into a discussion on manufacturing material.  If the material issue is addressed early then we can all discuss the other, more interesting aspects of the game/Kickstarter :)

I've not managed to start painting a team, yet

I got seven teams painted last year, plus a number of other DB bits bringing the total to ninety models.  I am pretty pleased about that.

Knowing that the rules are solid makes this a much easier investment for me than last time.  I cant wait to get stuck into the new teams, both in terms of painting and playing :)

I'll start painting my human team when the Sci-Fi Painting Club (or whatever it's gonna be called) goes live. I have to paint a Mega City Judge first, but then...

I find the painting clubs a blast for getting some long stalled projects back on the painting desk  :)

More dreadball, blech! Wish they'd done Warpath like they had originally planned, that game needs quite a lot of love to be remotely playable. Or redone the Dwarf King's Hold games, those are great games with just terrible components.

As for the material, the newer restic blend they used for deadzone wasn't that bad. A brass wire brush is absolutely essential. A brass wire brush is absolutely essential. A brass wire brush is absolutely essential. You can scrape the mold lines away with a knife or file and then the brush will remove all the burrs, barely takes longer than a metal figure to clean at that point.

oh, did I mention that a brass wire brush is absolutely essential?

Where the heck do I get a brass wire brush small enough for this purpose (I've ever only seen the Weber ones)?

I was the guy that came up with using a brass wire brush to clean mould lines off restic miniatures :)

Here is my brief tutorial on the Mantic forums:

Really, any stiff bristle brush will work!

Cheers

I guess that it has to be one with metal bristles, though? A stiff toothbrush surely wouldn't do the trick.

Are they for sale in DIY stores or the likes, or are they some kind of specialist tool that has to be purchased from specific types of store?

A lot of gun cleaning kits have suitable brushes.

Any brass brush is fine, I use ones a little larger than toothbrushes I got at my local automotive store. The brushes don't really remove any material, when you scrub the minis they have an effect much like fine sandpaper that gets into the crevices and brushes away the jagged flakes left from scraping with a knife/file. Don't use the steel brushes, they're much stiffer and can leave fine lines in the plastic but with the brash brushes you can scrub pretty hard with no damage to the figs.

Also, my interest in DBX just went from 0 to "ORLY?". I was checking the mantic blog and came across these

I may pick these up just to have, love thier ideas for a rock-people race. Really hope they make it into deadzone and warpath, at least as some kind of mercenary force. Still no real interest in DBX itself, but i do love the chance to see all these alien races.

Exactly.  I have used a suede brush (as in a brush for brushing suede) to do this for years.  Anyway, the material used to make the DBX models is not restic so its not really relevant here.

Those models are being made out of translucent plastic, which could be cool.  To date all the races in DreadBall have transferred to the rest of Mantics sci-fi universe, with things like the chovar now going the other way too.  Its a safe bet to say that these crystal guys will make it to sci-fi skirmish as well as DreadBall over the next year or two.

Hmm. I'll see if I can find a hunting store, then. We don't have gun stores 'round here (most guns are illegal for civilians, and hunting guns can only be purchased if you have a hunting license).
