IHMN in Numbers
« on: March 12, 2014, 03:04:14 AM »
Just been fooling around in Numbers to build a tool to help me create IHMN companies. Still working on some features but it calculates the point costs correctly.

It is the spreadsheet app that comes with Macs. Works on iOS as well. I just don't own a copy of Excel

You can do rougly the same in Excel, the spreadsheet in Microsoft's Office.  I think you can also come pretty close using the Open Office version of a spreadsheet program.

Yes you can do the same in OpenOffice and LibreOffice spreadsheets, just use lookup function.

Let me see if I can convert it to Excel

Craig, are you okay with people distributing something like this? Maybe via the IHMN website?

I've (mostly my wife actually) done a complete one with drop down options etc for Excel that Craig's had for ages. I think he was intending to put it up closer to the release of the next book but if you ask nicely...
So many projects..... so little time.......

The Excel Spreadsheet created by Dewbakuk's wife is one of two that Charles and I have used throughout the development of the three books. The other was by a chap called Aonghus.

We kept wishing to release it and then thought of new things we wanted in it as we released more materials through the blog and wrote each book. We shall probably release the latest Happy-Wifey version close to the publication of SDRS.

In the meantime if anyone wishes to create spread sheets/army builders in any format for IHMN we are happy for them to do so and publish them through their own blogs. We shall even link to them from the IHMN blog.

Our only concern about releasing one through the IHMN blog is that we do not know how thorough the testing has been, and if we release it then it shall be seen as 'official'. As Dewbakuk can attest even a small mistake in the data entry for the look-up tables or formulae can have unforeseen consequences. His wife's creation has been tested to death by the authors  :D

It's a shame you feel constrained like that Craig.

For a ruleset like Fog Of War where the emphasis is 100% competition gaming it's understandable, but I would have thought less so for a set like IHMN.  8)

Games are enjoyable things and variety and 'Unofficialness' lies at the heart of the best adaptations. I see the love of (or lust for) 'Official' books as an unfortunate side effect of GW.  :(

Hello Craig: first, I'll take this chance to say how much I'm enjoying IHMN, it's a real gem and the constant attention and participation with loads of material, tips, updates and everything in your blog is amazing!!

Concerning the excel spreadsheet might be of help locking it with a password(not to be revealed of course) the "data" cells so only the input ones will be active cells for the users? Probably was something you already considered but I'm just asking!

Drat, My second hand (from son #2) MacBook Air doesn't have an application called numbers.  I guess this notebook preceded "Numbers" - for a second there I was excited.
