Space ship doors
« on: 15 March 2014, 04:41:07 PM »
Have a crazy idea to make some old electrical boxes into rogue trader era space habitats. Need ideas for cheap space ship type doors to put on the front of the boxes.

Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!!!

Check out Corsec Engineering's "Flat Pack" terrain.  It comes in 15mm or 28mm: http://corseceng.com/15mm_flat_pack/

Cheapest would be simply cutting out a door 'jamb' from card, either plastic or fiberboard, scribe the surface of the box inside the frame to look like a door, paint window, Bob's your uncle.

However, for those of us [who are] straight-line cut challenged, Jonathan's does look a treat.

Ground zero games do a nice selection but at 15mm may be too small. Jeds's Governance of technology GOT range has a load of awesome resin doors, windows and entry panels which will do the job nicely.

There's a kind of plastic closure on carboard drinks containers that looks like a sci-fi door. It's like a rectangle with rouned corners, maybe 40mm by 25mm or thereabouts. Tomorrow, I'll go and see if I can find any and maybe inclue a picture.

And what's more, when you buy one (for about 65p/$1US/E0.85) you get a litre of some kind of juice free!

When I made some bunkers of styrofoam balls and cardboard I made my own doors using 3 layers of cardboard.

1st layer in the total shape of the door
2nd layer with the actual doors
3rd layer with the frame

Very cheap and I think they look great! It is possible to make any style or size you want.

I still have plans to paint some numbers on the door or similar. I have also been thinking of maybe adding a small console to the frame, which can be bought in resin, painted or made from scratch.

Of course, my idea assumed electrical boxes were the old, flat sided kind.

Now if you're trying to add a door to anything like those 'snowball' domes...  :o

I did something like that with a cheap plastic salad bowl, and used the flat bottom as a patio.  I had to trash it when I moved and I have no pictures, but it was pretty nice.

The terrain pack for Sedition Wars is out now, you get 18 single and 18 double doors in hard plastic, detailed on both sides, plus a bunch of other cool terminals and turrets and some biomechanical stuff too. $40 USD retail, I see it online for about $31 USD
