Left-handed human adventurers
« on: March 19, 2014, 12:50:10 AM »
I'm looking for that most difficult to find fantastical miniature: left-handed human adventurers.

Preferably medieval, preferably low-fantasy.

Does anybody make them? I've looked and found none. What is up with that?

And I'm not talking about the overdone dual-wielder. I mean for real leftorii; weapon in left hand and shield, torch, lantern, sack, &c. on right.

(I'm posting this here as well as in Medieval.)

I'm not sure you'll have much luck - righties seem to have all the luck. Weirdly, I've been doing a lot of plastic kitbashing recently, and have ended up with a number of lefties. Perhaps converting is a way forward?

there are a lot of reasons to use a shield the way most people use it. And humans up to primates have a clear and well researched preference for right hand dominance.
So apart from individual combat (and I can clearly confirm from experience the funny narrative about this topic in "the princess bride"), when it comes to the use of shields it is clearly about fighting in a formation - going even so far that fortresses are built with approaches that force You to expose the right side of the body.

so, here You have Your explanation: it is historically and anthropologically founded not to have lefthanders not adapting to the common handedness (in hand to hand combat), unless they are very proficient and have the privilege to cultivate their lefthandedness.
Keep in mind, it means opting out of every formation that statistically minimizes becoming a casualty.

so Your lefthanded adventurer will either be a peasant from the back of nowhere who incidentally picks up fighting or a pampered prince who had a fencing teacher and knew he would never have to be part of a formation  ;)

Yep, your last paragraph points to where I'm looking.

I'm talking about dungeon delvers and tomb robbers here not heavy infantry.

This is the Fantasy Adventures board after all.

Curious that your only suggested origins are peasant or prince. I think I could wedge a pirate in there.

even a fantasy world has rules to follow, and a social environment that dictates certain things. I was referring to the background of the adventurer, and how he came to using weapons in the first place. I asume that even in a fantasy world, combat proficiency is more a matter of exercise and not natural talent.

Anyway, the general approach I was hinting at was to look for someone from an organized state society who is not involved with the regular military. Pirate or any other background that favours individual skills might be a good start indeed

But sorry, I did not realize that my RPG character generation routine had taken over my writing cortex. From my memory, You might find more elven adventurers who are lefthanded

Thanks Mr Tough Guy.
I've got that Friar.

And so the answer is no, other than the half dozen or so figs from almost as many companies' inventories, nobody makes quasi-Western European medieval human adventuring leftorii.

Bizarre.

I guess if you want a job done right, or rather left, ...

well, we cannot overcome the confines of the human nature  ;)

as it happens, I stumbled over exactly this problem a few years ago when I experimented variations in holding postures for rifles....  :D

While I appreciate their efforts to keep the more sinister elements of society out of the armed forces, I'd just wish they didn't take it so literally....

Watch this space. We might be getting the F2000 or G36 instead of the SA80.

I was looking through my unwanted lead after reading this and I found two with weapons in their left hands. I have no idea of the manufacturer though.

sadly, Monty Python did not do a bit with the left handed fusilier in the firing line - would have been hilarious.....
