Burning the Whitehouse
« on: March 20, 2014, 09:00:20 PM »
The school club does a different themed game each summer.
Last year (for 1813) was Pride and Prejudice (with zombies) meets Sense and Sensibility (with sea monsters), with Captain Sharke and Sergeant Hagrid of the South Wessex, and (French Lieutenant) Javert seeking another woman (who may have been Tess of the Baskervilles).
The game was dedicated to the hard-working (but bemused) staff of the English department.
This year, in the spirit of international bonhomie, the boys have opted for 1814, Bladensburg and Washington. No great surprise to be fair, they have been planning on it since they did 1812 - Lake Wobegone.
The game will be fairly simple, a green cloth covered table (12' x 4') with some simple terrain and about 400 figures.
But one of the Duke of Edinburgh Award boys has scratchbuilt a model of the Whitehouse - scaled down and slightly simplified to fit the table.
Although the game is aimed at the summer (notably the War Torn show in Scarborough) it will be previewed this Saturday morning at the school open day.

So if you happen to be in Scarborough on Saturday between 10am and noon, call in to see us. Scarborough College, Filey Road.
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

p.s. Chris - I realise that I could have posted this in "events" but the school open day isn't quite an event.
I also considered putting it under Big Battalions.

But I thought I would share it here in the off-chance that someone might see it, and it's more of a general "chat" type of topic.

Can't find any bridges, some of the terrain is undercoated but not painted.
Will take pictures if poss.

I'd say it's all right for the moment! If you get a couple of shots from the various occasions (hint hint pics or it didn't happen ;) nudge nudge :D), we can still move it to a more fitting spot.

Quite interested to see what you come up with. Been in a bit of an Americana mood for the last few weeks (15mm ACW piquing my interest in particular, with 28mm Mountain Men close behind), and while it will all have to wait until after my upcoming move is done with, I'm noticing myself getting more and more interested in all that.

What do you think I've been reading these past nights (well, obviously not that one since it only came up today, but the older ones)? :D I really need to dig out and finish those Zorro figs.

Not a brilliant photo, but you can see roughly how big the table is.

Still a lot of painting to do before June....

This one shows US General Stanbury, commanding the first brigade in the field.
(One of our youngest players)

Bladensburg is just off camera to the right, the river is about 3 feet onto the board.

We haven't tried to represent Washington, just transported the Whitehouse to the edge of Bladensburg.

Made by James - one of the older boys - as the "skill" element of his bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.

Impressive!

Especially the Whitehouse is really well done!  8)

That's going to be a memorable game when the time comes...

Thank you.

The game is due end of June, I'll try to get pictures.

This weekend we are re-running our 1813 game (Pride & Prejudice with zombies meets Sense & Sensibility with sea monsters)

Mary would have approved of burning things on school premises, especially in her name. Books would most likely have been the preferred kindling though.  :D

Very nice project btw, excellent to see youth getting involved in the noble art.

I'll ask him next time we have a club meeting (after the Easter break now).

He was a model rail fan when he joined the school, but now he is regarded as the "terrain king" - he opted for terrain making as his DoE challenge (the 2 other boys on DoE duties this year are figure painting, although one chose fantasy and the other opted for 15mm Somalia).
