Early War BEF Cavalry
« on: 30 June 2008, 11:03:47 AM »
Hi there,

I'm looking for some insider knowledge if anyone out there has any.  I've heard that Great War Miniatures are going to be doing some BEF cavalry due out later this year.  Does anyone have any details of what there bringing out?  I had assumed they would be early war and had been holding off buying any BEF cavalry until i seen them, but I've since heard they may be late war, just looking for a 'heads up' if anyone here has some insider knowledge.

Further to that as a fall back should the Great War Miniatures be 'late war' I'm looking for some info on the other early war BEF Cavalry available.  I know BH does some does anyone have any photos?  Renegade do some as well but I dont want lancers, they could be an option if they could be converted to carry 1908 Pattern Sabre or SMLE, does anyone know where I could buy a loose sword rapier that could do the job? SMLE I can get loose from BAM.

sorry for the length of this, any help advice would be most appreciated.

cheers

Andy

I seem to remember reading something in a TMP thread by Dave A that the initial cavalry release would be "Late War". That's a sort of hazy recollection, mind, and I can't be more specific as I can't access TMP at work. That said, once the horse or horses have been made, I would imagine that both BEF and German cavalry could follow relatively quickly. Economy of scale and all that. I generally find that pretty much anything Dave and Aly do is well worth the wait. (but yes - I'd love to see BEF cavalry too  ;))

As for other cavalry (Renegade aside), Old Glory do late war British cavalry and Battle Honours UK do BEF cavalry, command and dismounted cavalry.

Unfortunately, you now know everything single that I know about the BH figures. Maybe somebody here has a pic they'd like to share with us?

The Renegade cavalry are supplied with an open right hand, with the intention that you supply the lance, so it would be straightforward to replace the lance with a rifle or sabre.

The only (28mm) western front British cavalry that I'm aware of are from Renegade and Battle Honours for troops with caps, and Old Glory for cavalry in helmets - I was surprised that Foundry didn't have any, since they have three different types of Germans (hussars, dragoons and uhlans).  I hope the rumours of GWM cavalry are true - I'll get some of those if they come on the market!

One other option to consider is Brigade Games.  Their Indian Lancers are very nice figures.  Although Indian cavalry was present on the western front from November 1914, their actual service was primarily in a dismounted role.  Still, one more option to consider!
