Who makes the best late war (ww1) Germans?
« on: April 03, 2014, 12:19:33 PM »
I "need" som germans to fight the russians on  the east front in 1918. The russians are from Brigade and Copplestone. Who makes good Germans that would fit as opponents to them?

Copplestone Back of Beyond russians? Great War late germans fit very well with those from size and style.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have never seen them in the lead, so I will take a look at them.
Yes, the BoB range.

Would people also use them for the German Freikorps i Latvia or the Baltische Landeswehr?

You could use our (Scarab) Austrians http://scarabminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5_1, as many customers use them as German stormtroopers and they match nicely with the Copplestone Russians, as a forthcoming Wargames Illustrated article will show.

We also stock the Great War Miniatures Germans if you want to mix and match packs, plenty of pictures on the web store

Hi BjornF
Our Great War Germans work very well for Friekorps , when Dave and started the range we always intended to push it forwards to the post war revolutions( one day :? )
You can also use them as ex army revolutionaries , they used the same kit
Civilian based troops are harder , but you could use Boers ( we did ) or have a look at the Musketeer Inter war range , Tsuba also do some cool stuff

All the best. Aly

I like Great War's late war Germans, and also like Brigade Games stormtroopers (they match up reasonably well together- but the Great War machine guns and mortars are much better).  For Freikorps, stay away from gas masks, and light kit works better than full packs (although assault packs are reasonable).  Most Freikorps units didn't have full, regulation kit.

Hi there

I just remembered this great picture of Friekorps, taken in Berlin (I think)
there are a couple of cool things there....

The flame thrower :o.... over kill or what.
The men in the peak-less stahlhelms, I think they were originally intended for the Turkish Army, this would be an easy conversion.

Also it shows us that we worry to much about figure compatibility  lol

All the best  Aly

The Renegade figures provide good variety

I have a couple of packs of Renegade, but they are quite a bit larger than either Great War or Brigade Games (both of which are of comparable size to each other and to Copplestone).  If you have the Copplestone Russians, a good command group to add to your late war Germans (or Freikorps) is from Copplestone's Back of Beyond range, the German Mercenaries pack
 http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/range.php?range=BOB
The saluting figure looks like he was taken right from the Osprey The German Friekorps book, plate D 1, Korvettenkapitan Ehrhardt, commander of II Marine Brigade (Brigade Ehrhardt) (or both the figure and the Osprey plate  are derived from the same photo?).

Also, Brigade Games makes a very nice range of WW I Austrians, which certainly can serve on the Eastern Front (and can do duty both as Austrian-Hungarian POWs fighting for the Reds, or as the Austrian equivalent of Freikorps, who fought against both the Poles and Ukranians in 1919-20).

How is the casting quality of Great War Miniatures these days? I bought some a few years back from Northstar and was appalled by the level of flash and mould lines. Have they gotten any better?
