Just watched S4 E1 and, mehurcule!, it makes me want to do those minis again! It seems like they have changed the approach to the original story a tafd and made it bit more...real. Opinions?

I got to work from home today and watch it in the am...   It'd be nice to hit a 'spoiler' tag in the title, cause let's be serious, it's gonna happen...  That said, anyone else read the series?  It's interesting to see where they took liberties with the original story, in some ways even maybe making it better.  At least for this medium.

To be honest I kinda watched most of it out of the corner of my eye, wincing every so often at all the ramped up 'edginess' and 'adultness' and half the characters reduced to the same old steely-threat personality. (And at Danaerys' woodenness, as usual)

Then it came to me. It happened to another medium back in the '90's, but TV drama is going through a dork age* now, isn't it?

*mispelling intentional.

Though I did pretty much like the bit with the Hound - he's supposed to be like that. So I won't give up just yet...

I think GRR Martin is involved i the script I believe. I think he has even written one or two episodes.

Having not read this far in the books, I don't know what's coming next. It does seem promising though! I nearly stopped watching it after the second last episode in season three! The just stopped sooooo many good stories in that episode!!!!

Looking at the special effects so far, it looks that it might NOT skip out of all the big fights this time? Looks like they're sending a bit of money this time.

Wondering how much I will like this season, started with the first season then read the first book, and the second book, but after reading the book the second season wasn't as good as the first, then decided to watch the tv show first and then read the books, so read book 3 after season 3, but didn't realize season 3 only covered the first half of the book, so I'm afraid I'm back to a season of picking out things that were differnt in the book

My impression is that they have changed direction, i.e. way of directing this season. The previous season was certainly full of misery but still a rather heady soup. The first episode felt more ominous and foreboding. The travels of Arya and The Hound is a very promising storyline, I think. Arya has matured (mentally, primarily, to say the least), actress and role person both.

I too like the Arya and Hound storyline.  I hadn't read the books and since the TV series began have avoided them to avoid both spoilers and variances.

Had season 3 bought for me for Easter so need to catch up, end of episode was cracking.

I am not sure but think the cinematography seems to have changed or possibly just characters getting older but seemed slightly different (I agree a year since last series may fade memory)

Haven't seen it yet. Will catch up on it in the next couple of days all being well. Just need to visit a friend who's recoded it from his Skybox... 

The TV adaptation has gradually diverged very slightly from the books in various ways.
Unfortunately, the more you diverge, the more that effect multiplies down the line, and the more you have to diverge further to make sense of it.
Martin (who does indeed have a hand in the scripts) has pretty much admitted this in interviews, but seems fairly relaxed about it.

I like the HBO serial very much. It's great viewing. Most enjoyable. But I prefer the books
