Cheers James, I haven't even thought about doing it as a participation game. I will give that some thought. The plans at the moment are to do the new Bournemouth show in February to start with, all depends on if my dad has recovered from his surgery by then, as he will be helping me with it. I do need to get some more games in soon to run through the rules, I am hoping that two fat lardies release version 2 of sharp practice by February as what I have read about them being streamlined in places would help with the running of the game

Quick question, did the Shogunate mounted officers wear samurai uniform or were they more westernised?

Nice. Let me give you some unasked-for info:

- Shinsengumi: supposedly they were not wearing any uniform at this time, although they had used to (the famous white and blue ones), although in "Sword of the samurai" they are depicted wearing a curious uniform black and red colour, so your choice (BTW, don't think on western-style uniforms: they wore traditional samurai attire). Another shadowy question is if they wore armour or not, but they were wearing chainmail armour during the street actions in Edo a few years before the war, so I guess it's your choice.

- Samurai and ashigaru: well, at this time the daimyo's armies seemed to have completely lacked any kind of uniformity. The ashigaru of the XIXth century were the lowest-class samurai, not the peasant turned soldier od the XVIth century. They wore a horrible mix of armours, from archaic-style (kamakura period) to the bullet-proof nambanjin armour of the late stages of the clan wars. Anyway, it seems that most of them had discarded the leg protections (suneate).

BTW, are you thinking about providing them with cavalry? And do you know museum miniatures' samurai range?

Thanks for the info Yuber, the only cavalry I will be using is the ones I have already painted, the Sharp Practice rules are large skirmish so I dont want to go overboard on the amount of units or it will get boged down, I can stretch to around 100 figs or so a side. I am aware of museum miniatures, do you think there are some suitable miniatures to use there

Suitable? They are a must! If you check the odd drawing from that era, you'll see that some people from traditional clans didn't wear any armour at all! (this is supported by a few japanese films in which only a few samurai on a given contingent would wear armour, sometimes just the daimyo!). They are just perfect to represent the minor, poorer clans.

BTW, I was talking about cavalry because all of it is described as almost useless in this age (obviously, aside the deshuntai). The japanese horses seem to have degenerated in the two centuries after the age of war, and most of them were closer to ponies than to european horses. The japanese horse had always been small and ill-tempered like the mongol on, but these ones had degenerated to the point that europeans despised them (that's why Napoleon the Third had presented the shogun with such a lot of horses).
