Dads Army Movie Remake
« on: 28 April 2014, 11:25:10 AM »
Just seen on BBC news and Empire news that plans are to make a Dads Army remake Toby Jones as Capt Mainwaring and Bill Nighy as Sgt Wilson. As a big fan of the series I'm not to sure about a remake at all.

I am a HUGE Dads Army fan - and I adore Bill Nighy, but no . . . . .

Just picked up the original movie in a charity shop for £1.50. Every bit as good as I remember it. The only positive thing a remake would do is bring it to a newer audience but............

"Who do you think you are kidding....."

This doesn't add to the prospect either:
The show's co-writer Jimmy Perry told BBC 5 live the new film had "been in the air for a long time".
The comedy legend, now 90, said: "Up to now I haven't taken it too seriously."
"When I signed the contract to release the film rights, one provision was that I didn't have to write anything, I didn't have to do anything. I'm letting them get on with it."

Just plain wrong.   :'(

I don't like watching Toby Jones, his face is wrong. He reminds me of 'The Moog'.

Not content with ruining the future, people want to ruin the past as well!!

I love Dads Army. But why rehash it?
I genuinely am starting to feel that the film & television industry in Britain is creatively bankrupt.

Here is a novel idea- Get a decent writer, who can create real believable, characters to write something NEW!!

To paraphrase Jackie Fisher: "Damn Dad's Army. it will be Bill Nighy's grave."

OK, that may have been about the Dardanelles. But you know what I mean.

Don't worry, it's not that bad:

The script will be written by Hamish McColl, who wrote Johnny English Reborn and Mr Bean's Holiday.

Oh, hang on, that's worse isn't it!

the main problem is that dads army is no longer funny.not to a modern audience.
It's one of those shows along with only fools and horses that makes me want to tear out my eyes and weep with boredom.

Does that mean it shouldn't get a reboot for those who like it? No, by all means it has a good fan base who deserve something good, but this will be made to try and reshape an old and ( dare i say ) outdated (or shall i say classic ) style of comedy to a modern audience, and i feel that it will leave both new fans and old fans left disappointed, as it will fall short of being able to appeal to the different tastes of either party.

(If you think this post is being harsh on a staple of British comedy, i assure you i could say worse about it.)

Typical Perry and Croft comedies - the gags weren't funny, it was the characters that were funny and the weird personalities, brilliantly cast. Look at any of their shows - 'Dad's Army', 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum', 'Hi-De-Hi', 'Allo Allo' - it's about catchphrases and well loved characters in comedic settings and circumstances. It's comforting and nostalgic high farce rather than hilarious jokes. Farce is difficult to do well these days and harder to sell.

Now if you were to reboot On the Buses with zombies and Peter Dinklage as Blakey. Wow.

That's showbiz gold, my friend.

Or, has been suggested already, find a new idea. They're not that hard.
