Somewhere in Italy, 3rd century BC - War Elephant Party
« on: 28 April 2014, 09:42:38 PM »
This thread will be for my so-called Middle Republican Romans, everything roughly begining with the Third Samnite War, through Pyrrhic adventures and up to the Punic Wars. At this point I have no clear plan how far to go down this road and what I'm going to do here but from time to time I certainly will be painting some stuff belonging into this fascinating era of Roman history. So perhaps you'll find here not only the Romans but also some of their countless enemies.

Today my latest LPL entry using a lot of miniatures from Aventine and shield tranfers by LBM, thanks so much to Keith from Aventine for the freebies (shields, spears, etc.). I love the idea of Romans riding elephants and though we have no evidence in this, apart from battles in the arena or first time Romans displaying the elephants in a triumph in Rome (275 BC), after their victory over Pyrrhus, so on the other hand we still have some lovely figures for crewmen and some fantastic elephants and that is why I’ve thought, what the heck, let’s go and paint an elephant for Romans. And so I did. Hope you like the result :)

Eric, really sorry, there will be some new themes till end of the current LPL :) After that I will try to stay on existing tracks (maybe not long-term bust at least for some time) and not to be blinded by all the amazing variety of Ancients!

Truly inspiring work, Professor! I especially like the 'weathering' for your legionary shields.

Looking forward to seeing more of these in the future.  :-*

You know, Alex, I'm very much in favour of anything Roman. So it's great to see you starting this project. And what a start it is! Very nice choice of colours, the somewhat muted tones are particularly good – and I like the old grey one. 8)

Nil desinendum!
